Topashish takes us on a nostalgic journey back to the era of VCRs, exploring the timeless charm of Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic movies. Discover how these character-driven masterpieces captured the human experience with unparalleled simplicity, warmth, and heart.
When it comes to watching movies, I am extremely selective. My cousin owned a Funai VCR player during my childhood, and almost every weekend, they would rent VCR cassettes. Along with my mother, aunt, and cousin, we would watch iconic, classic films. Even today, whenever I find the time, I enjoy revisiting those cult classics.
The genesis of every exceptional film lies in its script. Once the script is ready, the director’s role is to translate the story into a visual medium, thereby bringing it to life in a way that transcends mere narration.
Filmmaking is an art form that can inspire generations of creators. I absolutely loved watching films made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He showed that it was entirely possible to tell gripping stories without the need for exotic European locations or massive sets. Instead, his films were often set in humble, familiar spaces, including a middle-class living room, a government office, or a rented apartment.

Consider Utpal Dutt‘s iconic performance in Gol Maal, where he lectures Amol Palekar on the importance of a mustache. Similarly, the chemistry between “Jijaji,” played by the brilliant Om Prakash, and “Pyaremohan,” played by the legendary Dharmendra in the classic Chupke Chupke, is arguably the finest comedic anchor of the film. Even now, the audience is always on the verge of bursting into laughter watching them.

His filmmaking approach stood out due to its tight editing and character-driven storytelling style. While shooting, he was known to mentally revise scenes on the fly. In the Bombay film industry, he was affectionately known as “Hrishi da,” and he firmly established himself as a master film editor. He seamlessly combined emotional storytelling, sharp social commentary, and classic comedy into a signature style.
The cinematic brilliance of filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee reminds us that the true essence of cinema does not depend on substantial budgets or grand spectacles. For those of us who grew up watching his films on a VCR, his work offers a timeless masterclass in capturing the human experience with simplicity, warmth, and heart.
