Anasmita Ghosh: Kolkata’s Rising Musical Sensation
Anasmita Ghosh captivates Kolkata with her new track “Chole Jeona” in Phool Pishi O Edward. Discover the singer-songwriter’s journey from classical training to Tollywood playback success
Kolkata has embraced a soulful new voice in playback singing: Anasmita Ghosh. The vocalist lends her tone to “Chole Jeona,” a featured track from Windows Production’s cinematic venture Phool Pishi O Edward, directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. Composed by Joy Sarkar, the melodic track highlights Anasmita’s rich timber, adding character and emotional depth to the arrangement.
“Getting an opportunity to work under Windows Production was more than a dream come true,” says Anasmita. “The journey from singing the scratch track to recording the final version was an exciting and massive learning experience.”
Anasmita’s career spans over a decade. Her journey began in 2014 with her debut Hindi album, MASHRUF, featuring four self-composed tracks. A lyricist as well, she has penned songs for artists such as Anwesshaa Dasgupta (“Ek Subah”), Antara Nandy (“Jane Kyun Nahi”), Shovan Ganguly (“Main Hoon Tere Liye”), Ronkini Gupta, and Ashwin Srinivasan (“Dil Ne Jo Mere Kaha Hai”). She also contributed a Hindi song to the Bengali film Michael (2018). Her songwriting earned her consecutive Best Lyricist awards at the Clef Music Awards in Mumbai (2023 and 2024) for her independent releases “Sunle Maula” and “Ye Zindagi.”
Her playback credits have grown steadily. Beyond her featured role in Phool Pishi O Edward, her vocal contributions include lines in Bye Bye Bangkok, backing vocals in hit films like Belashuru (“Tapa Tini”) and Bohurupi (“Behula Sundori”), as well as work on major television serials (Rani Rashmoni, Potol Kumar Gaanwala) and theatre productions, including Chetana’s Gandhi vs Gandhi. Along the way, she has collaborated with prominent composers such as Smt. Upali Chattopadhyay, Sri Prabuddha Banerjee, and Mayukh-Mainak.
Originally from Bokaro, Anasmita relocated to Kolkata to pursue her musical training. She spent ten years at Shrutinandan studying Indian classical music under Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. Her formal education spans multiple styles, including modern vocals with Goutam Ghosal, Rabindrasangeet with Jayati Chakraborty, Ghazal with Raju Das, rhythm and taal structure with Somnath Roy, and Western vocal training with Diedre Lobo.
Looking ahead, Anasmita continues to balance commercial assignments with independent endeavors. “Along with live performances and commercial recording commitments, I have regularly focused on my independent projects,” she notes. “This year, I am working on a ghazal album featuring my own compositions alongside works by other composers, which I plan to release before Durga Puja.”
