Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) of Shillong has been named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists for 2024 by Stanford University, marking his fifth consecutive appearance on the prestigious list.

Well, just as I was about to call it a day and shut down my trusty old computer, a fleeting thought crossed my mind – “Let’s have a quick peek at The Shillong Times.” Little did I know, that decision would lead me down a rabbit hole of pride and inspiration! You see, nestled in the news was a story that gave me yet another reason to stand tall and proudly proclaim, “Shillong, my motherland, strikes again!”

So what I read was that the local scientific community, along with the entire region, has much to celebrate, and rightly so! Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), has been named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists for 2024 by none other than Stanford University. Yes, you heard me right – Stanford University! The prestigious list was published on the 16th of September 2024, and there we have it: Shillong shining on the global stage yet again.

Now, this isn’t Dr. Ahmed’s first rodeo. In fact, it’s his fifth consecutive year on the Stanford list – talk about consistency! His field of expertise? The mind-boggling, head-scratching world of Theoretical Physics, with a sharp focus on General Relativity and quantum mechanics. Let’s be honest, if you’re anything like me, you probably need a double espresso to even begin wrapping your head around that lot. But Dr. Ahmed? He’s publishing research papers like they’re going out of style – 165, to be precise, in Scopus-indexed journals with fancy names like the European Physical Journal C and Annals of Physics. It’s enough to make your brain do cartwheels, isn’t it?

When asked how he felt about being recognised (again), Dr. Ahmed modestly said, “It is truly humbling to be recognized by Stanford University for the fifth year in a row. This achievement highlights the significance of dedicated research and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. I am deeply thankful for the support I have received from USTM and my colleagues.”

Humble to the core, yet we all know he’s probably got a shelf at home groaning under the weight of his accolades.

Dr. Ahmed’s journey began at Bholanath College, Dhubri, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 2006. He followed this with a master’s degree at Gauhati University in 2009 and then topped it off with a PhD from the same university in 2016. You could say he’s got more letters after his name than a post office!

But on a more serious note, Dr. Ahmed’s achievement is not just his own. It’s a beacon of hope and a shining example of what dedication and passion can achieve – not just for him, but for all the young aspiring scientists in our region. It’s a testament to the world-class research happening right here in Meghalaya, at the University of Science and Technology, which is proving to be a hub for academic brilliance.
