Meghalaya is all set to paint the town red — quite literally — with the return of the much-anticipated Meghalaya Strawberry Festival! If you thought strawberries were best left lounging atop a Victoria sponge, think again. From 2nd to 3rd May, starting bright and early at 10 o’clock, this jolly jamboree will be sprawling across three cracking locations: Sohliya (Ri-Bhoi), Syntung (East Khasi Hills), and Darechikgre (West Garo Hills).
The festival, rather handsomely organised by Meghalayan Age Limited (MAL) in cahoots with the Departments of Tourism and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, isn’t just about scoffing berries till you burst. Oh no — it’s all part of a grander plan to show off Meghalaya’s lush rural charms and thriving local entrepreneurship. Agro-tourism, as they call it — or, in less fancy terms, mucking about in fields and having a smashing time while you’re at it.
Now, it wouldn’t be a proper knees-up without plenty to keep everyone out of mischief. Visitors can get stuck in with strawberry picking, try their hand at traditional beverage workshops (because who doesn’t fancy a tipple?), and keep the ankle-biters entertained with a host of children’s activities at the Strawberry Festival. There’s music, dancing, and culinary demonstrations too — in case you fancy swapping your kitchen disasters for something a little more edible.
For those who think lounging about with a basket of strawberries is a bit too easy-peasy, the festival’s also rolling out the red carpet for adventure enthusiasts. Expect cycling tours, farm treks, and even glamping — that’s camping, but with cushions and the possibility of a proper cup of tea.
Strawberry lovers — and let’s face it, who isn’t? — can pluck the juiciest fruits straight from the farm and indulge in a cornucopia of berry-based goodies. We’re talking wines, jams, ice creams, and even traditional cakes that would make Mary Berry weak at the knees.
Culinary whizz-kids can also potter off to jam-making and baking workshops, while the musically inclined can bob along to local musicians belting out both classic tunes and catchy originals. Frankly, it’ll be harder to stand still than a cat on a hot tin roof.
Now, before you think Meghalaya is just throwing this party for a lark, here’s a little something to chew over: as of 2024, the State has clocked a whopping 1,220 metric tonnes of strawberry production. Not too shabby, eh? There are big plans afoot too — expanding cultivation from 100 acres to a staggering 500. No small potatoes — or should we say, no small strawberries — in sight.
Over 115 local farmers are the real stars of the show, whose dedication and elbow grease have turned Meghalaya into one of India’s leading strawberry powerhouses.
The first edition of this fruity fiesta kicked off in 2024, drawing crowds from far and wide. And if early signs are anything to go by, this year’s festival will be the bee’s knees — an absolute must for anyone who fancies a sweet escape to the countryside.
So, if you’ve got a soft spot for strawberries and a hankering for the great outdoors, dust off your straw hat and make your merry way to Meghalaya. It promises to be berry, berry good indeed!
