E-Factor in Nongkhyllem: A Glitzy Fit for a Green Sanctuary?

Nongkhyllem updates

E-Factor Experiences Ltd., a Delhi-based event firm, has been awarded a ₹23.60 crore eco-tourism project inside Meghalaya’s Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary, sparking criticism over its credentials and environmental implications.

The recent awarding of a ₹23.60-crore eco-tourism project inside the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district to E-Factor Experiences Ltd., a Delhi-based event management firm known for high-profile weddings and corporate extravaganzas, has stirred up a hornet’s nest—particularly among environmental groups and conservationists.

Yesterday, East India Story reported that the Green Tech Foundation, an environmental NGO, had demanded the immediate scrapping of the project, calling it “a threat to one of Meghalaya’s most ecologically sensitive and biodiversity-rich zones.” In a letter addressed to the state’s Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, the Foundation raised alarm bells over the project’s potential impact on the sanctuary’s fragile ecosystem. They strongly urged the government to prioritise community-based development and conservation instead.

More Showbiz than Sanctuary?

While E-Factor’s name may ring bells in glitzy Delhi circles, its experience in eco-tourism is rather thin on the ground. The company has previously ventured into tourism with projects like Odisha’s eco-retreat camps and Gujarat’s Vadnagar Archaeological Experiential Museum. However, its record has not been without blemish. In 2022, the Odisha Tourism Department issued a stern notice to E-Factor and another Delhi-based firm for delivering substandard glamping facilities. Issues ranged from unhygienic tents and poorly equipped kitchens to inadequate dining halls—far from the idyllic experiences promised in glossy brochures.

Meanwhile, the Vadnagar museum project, though innovative in its immersive exhibits, is still too fresh to be judged on impact. For all intents and purposes, E-Factor remains an events firm more accustomed to fairy lights and floral backdrops than forest conservation and sustainable tourism planning.

Premature Confidence?

Eyebrows were further raised when it emerged that E-Factor had begun advertising for site managers in Shillong as early as January 2025—well before the tender was officially awarded. Critics see this as more than just coincidence. In fact, many are asking whether the tender process was simply a rubber-stamping exercise for a pre-decided deal.

Wildlife in the Crosshairs

The Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary is no backwater reserve. Recognised by the national Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) as one of the best-managed protected areas in the Northeast, it hosts several keystone species—leopards, Indian bison (gaur), and a remarkable variety of birdlife. Allowing a tourism project of this scale within its bounds—especially one spearheaded by a firm with limited eco-tourism credentials—has left conservationists fuming.

Sustainable Alternative Proposed

In their appeal, the Green Tech Foundation did more than just criticise. They laid out a clear alternative: invest the project’s funds in improving the livelihoods of the forest-fringe communities. By supporting sustainable practices and creating local employment, the government could both uplift human lives and safeguard the sanctuary’s long-term ecological balance.

A Question of Priorities

At the heart of the matter is a fundamental question—should spectacle trump sustainability? By entrusting a delicate ecological undertaking to a company whose bread and butter is event choreography, has the Meghalaya government put form over function?

Unless the state steps in to reassess its priorities, it risks alienating not only conservationists but also the very communities whose involvement is crucial to preserving the sanctuary. With public scrutiny now intensifying and the press sniffing around, one hopes the authorities won’t sweep this under the rug.

Because if the past is any indication, ignoring the writing on the wall could land this whole affair in a right pickle.

At East India Story, we’re not just about what bleeds or leads. We’re about what inspires, surprises, and reminds us all that across mountains, cultures, —there’s more that connects us than divides us.
