East India: A Poetic Journey Through Dreams and Legacy

Srishti Ahuja
Northeast

East India travel dreams come alive through tales of resilient people, deep culture, and majestic landscapes. This poem by Srishti Ahuja honors a land she admires from afar, capturing its enduring spirit.

East India has always stood at the crossroads of history and stood the tests of time with its resilient people, deep-rooted culture, vast lands of forest, and the tall mountains that border it. Though I’ve never been there, the image of East India lives vividly in my mind — a land shaped by tradition, nature, and enduring spirit.

Writing this poem was my way of connecting with that image, of honoring a place that I deeply admire from afar. It’s high on my bucket list, and through this piece, I tried to capture what it feels like to dream of a place — to feel its presence in your imagination and long to one day walk its roads and breathe its air. What fascinates me most about East India is how seemlessly it blends contrast- the serenity of the monastries, the thunderous roar of the tribal drums, the colonial past of Kolkata and the untouched wilderness of the Northeast. I imagine the petrichor of Mawsynram filling the cold mountain air, the scent of tea and spices from Darjeeling flowing through the bustling markets, the quiet strength of people who’s identities have stood fast through all the changes in the past and the beauty of nature that feels almost sacred.

I chose poetry as a way to express this emotional pull — the fluidity of verse helps mirror the flow of rivers and cultures in that part of the country. I hope this poem brings readers a glimpse of that world as I see it in my heart — not just a destination, but a feeling. A longing. A deep appreciation for a part of India that continues to stand tall, vibrant, and rooted in stories yet to be lived.

East India – Land of the Rising Sun

East India, where dawn begins to run,

The rising sun shines bright on everyone.

An emerald arc — the seven sisters’ grace,

Each with a tale, a rhythm, a face.

Mystical lands where legends unfold,

In forests deep and mountains bold.

Where whispers float from hill to tree,

And nature hums in harmony.

A land where culture and colors blend,

Where ancient roots and futures bend.

East India — a dream begun,

Beneath the golden morning sun.
