In the murky underbelly of Kolkata’s medical establishment, one can’t help but notice a rather unseemly game of ‘who’s got the upper hand’ being played. And it’s not just a question of who’s performing the latest surgery. This time, it seems, the stakes involved something a tad more sinister: a deadly concoction of bribery, coercion, and ultimately, tragic violence. Some new findings CBI.
It’s not every day you hear of a medical student being harassed to such an extent that refusing to cough up fifteen lakhs—yes, you read that right, fifteen lakhs—could cost one their life. The whispers down the corridors of RG Kar Medical College tell a tale as twisted as a pretzel, where the young doctor-in-training was allegedly being hounded for money to get her research paper approved, and a few extra lakhs thrown in to ensure she passed her final exams. One can only imagine the audacity, not to mention the sheer cheek of those involved. After all, if you don’t hand over the dosh, someone’s going to ‘see you right.’ And by ‘seeing you right,’ we’re not talking about afternoon tea and scones.
Sources close to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now claim that this young woman had quite bravely stood her ground, refusing to line the pockets of these shadowy figures. Unsurprisingly, her defiance was met with harassment over the course of the past year. Talk about being put through the wringer! This wasn’t your typical hospital drama either. She had even confided in friends about her growing discomfort with her duties, feeling like she was on the sharp end of a stick.
Now, enter the ‘powers that be,’ the ever-elusive ‘upper echelons,’ who were allegedly tipped off about her plan to report everything in writing. However, rather than setting things right, it appears someone decided to ‘handle’ the situation. Who these illustrious figures are remains a mystery, but if Bomkesh Bakshi were on the case, we’d likely already have a full account.
Investigators now face the Herculean task of piecing together what happened on that fateful night. Evidence points to the sinister events being confined between the second and sixth floors of the hospital, specifically the Burn Unit and the General Medicine Department. You’d think it would be straightforward, but alas, like a cup of cold tea, the facts are anything but palatable. CCTV footage, phone data, and interviews with over 350 individuals have painted a picture fuzzier than your grandma’s old TV set.
Curiously, a few employees saw the victim that night, but accounts differ wildly. One person recalled seeing her heading upstairs around 11 pm. Another claimed to have spotted Sanjay, one of the accused, loitering near the seminar room where her body was later discovered. But did anyone see him actually enter? Of course not. People rarely catch the villain in the act, do they?
The cherry on top is the mysterious hospital lift. This isn’t your average lift, mind you. Usually reserved for doctors and essential staff, it’s a prized commodity in a place where walking from floor to floor could add hours to your day. On that particular night, it appears the lift was activated for an ‘emergency patient.’ Who that patient was remains as much a puzzle as where one sock goes after a wash.
Adding another layer of confusion, a postgraduate student has let slip that the seminar room wasn’t the only resting place that night. Apparently, there’s a posh little ‘sleep room’ where the more fortunate staff catch forty winks. This room was reportedly locked from 3:30 am onwards. Why, you ask? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps someone thought a little DIY renovation was in order? Either way, the construction work began soon after.
For now, the CBI is picking through the breadcrumbs, trying to make sense of the tangled mess left behind. But as we all know, in such cases, finding answers is a bit like trying to herd cats. Let’s just hope they manage to untangle this web before it gets any knottier. Until then, it’s another day, another mystery in the city that never sleeps—or at least, never stops spinning its wheels in the mire of corruption and chaos.
