Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, has been arrested by the CBI alongside three others for alleged financial irregularities and a shocking criminal scandal, including charges related to organ sale and corruption
In a dramatic turn of events, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, found himself in the crosshairs of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday. Ghosh, alongside three other individuals, was arrested in connection with a probe into alleged financial irregularities at the hospital, where a junior doctor was tragically found raped and murdered on the morning of 9th August—a time when Ghosh was at the helm of the institution.
According to sources, the three others now facing the music are Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha. Ali, notably, served as Ghosh’s personal bodyguard, while Sinha and Hazra were vendors supplying medical equipment to R.G. Kar during Ghosh’s tenure. Insiders suggest that the CBI has uncovered irrefutable evidence pointing to these three as Ghosh’s partners in crime, complicit in the murky financial dealings that have marred the reputation of the hospital.
Sinha and Hazra, as per the grapevine, were the beneficiaries of these alleged irregularities, lining their pockets as Ghosh dished out contracts and tenders to his cronies. The allegations against Ghosh read like a textbook case of corruption. It’s claimed that he bypassed the usual state Public Works Department (PWD) protocols, opting instead to award infrastructure-related tasks to private entities—conveniently known to him. This not only breached standard practice but also raised eyebrows over the transparency and ethics of his administrative decisions.
More shocking, perhaps, are the accusations of Ghosh’s involvement in the illegal sale of biomedical waste, a practice that poses severe health and environmental risks. Further darkening his already murky record, allegations have surfaced suggesting that Ghosh used the hospital as a front to rake in money through businesses run under the names of others. Such actions, if proven true, would be a gross misuse of his position as a government official, raising serious ethical and legal questions.
But the gravest charge of all, which could send shivers down anyone’s spine, is the alleged sale of organs from unidentified bodies brought to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem. If proven, this macabre business would constitute one of the most heinous abuses of power seen in recent times.
Following a gruelling 16-day interrogation, the CBI finally moved in, arresting Ghosh on Monday evening. Earlier that day, Ghosh had made his way to the CBI office in the CGO complex in Salt Lake, where he was questioned by the agency’s special crime unit investigating the rape and murder case. After hours of grilling, Ghosh was then transferred to the CBI’s Nizam Palace office, where the economic offences wing is conducting a parallel investigation into the alleged financial improprieties at R.G. Kar.
This unfolding scandal, with its grim blend of financial malfeasance and horrific criminal allegations, has cast a long shadow over R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. As the CBI’s investigations continue, one can only hope that justice will prevail and that such breaches of trust will be met with the full force of the law. The people of Kolkata and beyond are watching closely, for this case has become a litmus test for the integrity of public institutions and the accountability of those in power.
