Sandeep Ghosh is penniless approaches High Court

Former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, turns to Kolkata High Court to access his fixed deposits for legal fees and family expenses, as banking bureaucracy complicates the withdrawal process while he remains incarcerated.
In a curious twist of fate, it seems that even the brightest minds aren’t exempt from life’s financial curveballs. Former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, is in a bit of a pickle. Facing mounting legal fees and family expenses, Ghosh has found himself knocking on the doors of the Kolkata High Court, hoping for a lifeline from his own savings.
It’s no secret that times are tough for Sandeep Ghosh. Strapped for cash and desperate to access funds from his fixed deposits, he’s requested the court’s intervention to withdraw a modest sum of ₹20 lakh. With his sons’ education and the ever-growing pile of legal bills looming over him like a bad dream, one can hardly blame the chap for wanting to break into his own piggy bank.
However, there’s one small hiccup. Ghosh happens to be behind bars, courtesy of a series of rather serious allegations. And that, dear reader, is where things get sticky. The bank requires the man’s signature to authenticate the withdrawal, but with Ghosh currently a guest of the state at the Presidency Jail, getting a signature verified has become a bit of a tall order. While the jail authorities are more than happy to oblige with his signature, the bank, displaying what one might call over-cautious prudence, is dragging its feet over the matter of authentication.
One can’t help but wonder if bureaucracy was always this labyrinthine, or if Ghosh’s situation simply adds a few extra layers of red tape. After all, when a man is in jail, you’d think sorting out something as mundane as withdrawing his own savings would be the least of his worries. Yet, here we are.
As it stands, Ghosh has taken his plea to the High Court, where Justice Bibhas Patnaik is expected to hear the matter on Friday. No doubt, this case will have the legal eagles flapping their wings in anticipation, eager to see whether Ghosh can gain access to his hard-earned money.
In the grander scheme of things, this legal wrangling comes on the heels of some rather unsavoury accusations. Ghosh’s name has been embroiled in a murky mix of financial irregularities and even more serious allegations of tampering with evidence in a rape and murder case at the R.G. Kar Medical College. Unsurprisingly, this has only added fuel to the fire, with Ghosh now being the subject of both CBI scrutiny and public suspicion.
But for now, the matter at hand remains financial. Whether the court will see fit to let Ghosh dip into his savings remains to be seen. One might imagine that after all the drama, his fixed deposits are about the only thing that are, well, still fixed.
At the end of the day, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of irony here. A man once at the pinnacle of academia, now facing legal turmoil, caught up in a battle just to access his own money. It’s the sort of tale you might expect to find in the pages of a Kafka novel, rather than the courts of Kolkata.
So, as the saying goes, we’ll have to wait and see whether Ghosh’s request for funds is approved. In the meantime, one can only imagine the frustration of sitting in jail, watching the interest on those deposits accrue, while legal fees soar even higher. A right kerfuffle, if ever there was one.
