Karma Catches Up: A Tale of Divorce, Betrayal And Healing

Karma Catches Up

Karma works in mysterious ways. When words shatter a thirteen-year marriage built on love and trust, like Shital’s, the sting of betrayal can be profound. Yet, sometimes, the very act of inflicting pain sets in motion a chain of events that leads to an unexpected healing

Words can uplift the weak, strengthen them within, and at the same time it can create havoc to the extent, that it can kill a loving relationship and make all the happy memories disappear, with only the ugly echo of words, said to hurt you and me.

But, is it proper to lie then, to cover your weakness, betray the believer and make them guilty for having seen a glimmer of hope in you.

Shital’s thirteen years of complete love, devotion, faith and trust had been broken with her husband’s words.” It’s not working out anymore, you never have time for me, am sorry you found this way but this was bound to be. I am miserable with you, so it’s time to walk away before things get bitter. I want a divorce and I hope you will forgive me but it’s for the best,” Yeshi said coolly as if he was an actor, delivering a piece of mugged up dialogue.

Shital’s just stood there before her husband, numb and frozen in time, what was this she was hearing, she had been busy all day, planning for his surprise birthday party.

She knew things weren’t going great between them, but now the truth dawned upon her, that the only person who had been tirelessly trying to fix up their relationship, had only been her.

It was her only, she saw his behaviour change since last year, his smiles and laughter while checking his phone, his singing romantic Bollywood film songs in the shower, the mute mode on in front of her, the less amount of times they had been intimate with each other and the mark, the love bites on his neck which he claimed was due to an insect bite.

Maybe, it was a special insect that chose to bite only her tall, fair good looking husband.

She had been blind to all the tell-tale signs, of his disappearing during the weekends on excuses of work related workshops to be attended to and his permanent silly smile on his handsome face that disappeared, if it happened to see her instead.

He looked at her shocked expression and went on to say,”Shital you’re a fantastic woman, I did marry you for love but you killed it with your indifference, you never were interested in making love, always complaining of migraine, you nagged me all the time, you never went out for dinner,” he then saw her eyes look back into his, her loyal, trusting beautiful light eyes that demanded an answer from him.

He had always been intimated by her honest ways and now even though he was scared, he knew he had to say it aloud, his girlfriend was pregnant and would walk out on him, if he didn’t confront his wife right now. And he had fallen badly for his mistress.

So he went on saying,” I met Swati online, we were just good friends, but she noticed the loneliness in me, she’s the best thing that ever happened to me, I love her a lot and I want to spend my life with her, please understand me I never wanted to hurt you, you’re a beautiful woman, you will find someone too,” she had been silently listening to every word of betrayal but the last few words cut her the deepest.

“Find another man, you coward, you know me well that I have never looked at any other man besides you, so don’t even dare to assume things about me, you coward!”

“What the fuck! you mean to say that you were lonely, what about me? You had me for real, after thirteen years of your god damn shit that I tolerated, on your stupid birthday and you hit me with this crap, really Mr Yeshi Bhutia, you are a one hell of a lying, conniving arse hole,” she started screaming at the top of her voice.

Then the floodgates opened, she cried and cried and he didn’t even dare to lay a finger on her. He still felt she was beautiful, more prettier than his mistress, but they had lost their bond, he couldn’t live with her and now that Swati had conceived it was his duty to give their child his name.

After what seemed like eternity she whispered something audible, Yeshi drew in close to hear what she was saying. It was weak at first but became loud and clear.

“Get out of my house, you coward, and my lawyers will contact you as soon as it’s possible.” Wow that was fast and that wasn’t what he had been expecting at all.

He had expected the tears and the curse words, but not this. She told him she was calling her brother, if he refused to leave. The door shut close behind her and she cried some more. Then she wiped her tears washed her face and called her friends over.

Her flat was soon occupied by relatives and friends, she had arranged a surprise birthday party for her husband, she took the opportunity of her dear ones all together under her roof, to inform them the real reason behind her husband’s absence.

They were all very sympathetic and everyone was relieved for they believed she would be better off without the lazy bum hubby of hers.

Yeshi rang her door bell for almost like the twentieth time before it was finally opened by a stranger.

He was rubbing his eyes, obviously in deep sleep, ‘ yes who do you want?’ he asked sleepily again rubbing his eyes.

“Babes who’s that?’ a familiar husky voice called after him and he was shocked to see his girlfriend wearing a man’s tee and shorts, her hair messed up and a love bite right on her visible nape.

She looked confused but managed to say,”yes what do you want?” she seemed so sexy and desirable, but her words exposed the hypocrite that she really was.

But wasn’t he also one he reflected, but all his lips could say was, “sorry, wrong address.” He walked back and kept walking.

Shital’s face, her solid support for him when his business failed, her tasty homemade meals, her lovely hair that fell on her eyes, her beautiful smile that was meant only for him now all came rushing to his broken mind and his heart felt agonized.

He was a loser, a failure and yes an arse hole his life was over, suddenly his phone rang, her name was flashing on his screen. This was a sign from heaven above, he would beg to be forgiven, he took the call and the now confident and resolute female voice calmly said,” hey coward, meet me tomorrow in my office, I have the divorce papers and I would love to see you bleed high and dry.”

Her voice was icy cold and she meant every word she uttered.

He shut his eyes and looked above and knew God was still around guess sometimes Karma works super-fast.
