A Split Personality of Love and Betrayal

Trinity Rai
Split Personality

Trinity Rai‘s story delves into the profound complexities of Split Personality. Rita’s heart shattered seeing Tashi, her best friend of forty years, reduced to a frail shadow of her former self. Their bond, forged in school and tested by life, was unique. Now, a devastating betrayal had brought Tashi to Manipal’s psychiatric ward, a place where her fractured reality became painfully apparent.

Rita looked at her best friend, Tashi who looked so pale and weak.

Her heart went out to her best friend of forty years and to see her like this today simply tore her heart apart.

She remembered her school days spent with her all her life she had but only one friend and that had been Tashi who stood by her through thick and thin.

Rita was just the opposite of her friend, she was shy, basically an introvert, who loved to read books and listen to music.

She excelled in making sketches, whereas Tashi was the extrovert, always raring to go.

In all the school activities Tashi had excelled in but Rita never took part.

They did everything together and it was weird but as they stepped into their adolescence, both started crushing on the same person.

Every time this happened they both went for the same guy, it was as if their soul was connected.
Though seemingly different both felt alike.

Things went on smoothly and then Tashi fell for Aryan Chettri, a software engineer and then things started to change.

Tashi didn’t introduce Aryan to Rita, she feared this one too would be snatched by her friend. It always happened that way, the soft spoken, feminine and beautiful Rita always stole her boyfriend.

Tashi stopped communicating with Rita, she was head over heels in love with her new man. Rita missed Tashi, she knew something was up, she tried her best to read Tashi’s mind, but she had gone numb towards her.

Her memories were fading away.

Today after such a long gap Rita met her best friend in the psychiatric ward at Manipal.

Her athletic friend was nothing, but a shrivelled up ghost of her former past. Tashi saw Rita and embraced her crying her name aloud, that surprised all her family members gathered at the hospital. Tashi’s brother appeared pale, as if he had seen a ghost when Rita asked him what had happened to her former best buddy. Then she saw Tashi’s mother who recognised her and then rushed to hold her in a tight embrace to sob her heart out.

She made Rita sit on the bed and told her how Aryan’s betrayal had shoved Tashi into chronic depression. Tashi had been blind in love and Aryan had got tired of her overtly caring nature, he wanted to be free and didn’t want to tie down with a woman who was a ‘bore’ according to him.

What made matters worse, was that Aryan broke up with her over a text message.

So many years of relationship was summed up by his text that read:

‘Hey Tashi, I feel suffocated with you, I feel Iike I don’t even know you so this is it .I can’t be with you, find someone else better than me, I don’t deserve you.”

This turned off the light and dampened her spirited soul. She stopped caring for herself, and basically turned into one of the ‘living dead’.

Rita cried and hugged Tashi’s mother and told her that now that she was here, she would never leave Tashi alone.
Her mother was now crying hysterically and so was everyone who heard them.

The doctor made her round and took Mrs Pema Dolma, Tashi’s mom outside and explained.

” Your daughter has a split personality, she has this character Rita inside her, both egos try to battle in order to take over the body. This is a complex case but we need you all to cooperate well,”

Thus spoke Dr Bela, and when Tashi’s mother asked her how to deal with it. The doctor replied “Split Personality shatters lives. Love your daughter, care for her more for only love and understanding can help her now.”
