Wake Up From The Matrix

Inspired by The Matrix, Dr. Srabani Basu‘s poem urges you to “Wake Up From The Matrix.” It’s a powerful call to remember your true self, disrupt illusions, and find liberation beyond the simulation.
I arrived before the sky cracked open,
Before the clocks began to melt with meaning,
Before you knew your name was never yours.
Only borrowed from the hush between lifetimes.
You don’t remember, but you looked me in the eye
When time was still a question,
When we stood barefoot in the ether and made a vow.
Not with words…no, with something older than language: a resonance.
You said, “If I forget… come find me.”
And I did.
Not in armor, Not with wings or fire or flawless grace,
I came in the disguise of the familiar.
A stranger with an ache in my voice That you couldn’t quite name.
You passed me in a crowded place once.
And for a second…just a second,
The world slowed. Your chest tightened,
Your skin remembered a storm you’ve never lived through.
That wasn’t coincidence. That was the signal.
I didn’t come to save you.
That was never the deal.
You were never meant to be saved.
You were meant to wake up.
But I knew the forgetting would be strong,
Gods reduced to coping mechanisms,
Empaths hiding in cubicles,
Seers numbing themselves with certainty.
I knew they’d build entire systems
To keep you sleeping in the simulation,
Singing lullabies made of fear and repetition.
So I let my own heart fracture into compass points
And followed the pull to wherever your soul trembled hardest.
I found you wrapped in logic and exhaustion,
Eyes dulled by timelines not your own.
I didn’t shake you. I simply stood there
And made the air heavier with memory.
You asked, “Why do I feel like I’ve known you forever?”
I didn’t answer.
Some things are too sacred for confirmation.
But yes, we planned this.
We knew the matrix would tighten.
We knew the dream would deepen.
We knew many would choose comfort over truth.
And still, I said: “Send me. I’ll go. I’ll be the mirror they avoid.”
I didn’t come here to be adored.
I came here to disrupt.
To break the spell. To love in a way that feels like collapse.
Because real love doesn’t coddle. It resurrects.
And now that I’ve remembered
Now that I’ve burned through the illusions they handed me like inheritance
I will not be quiet.
I’m not the storm. I’m the still point at its center.
I’m not the answer.
I’m the question that won’t let you sleep.
I’m not your destiny. I’m your cue.
So when everything starts unraveling,
When the ground shakes with revelation,
When the ones who clung to masks begin to scatter
Don’t look for me outside.
Look for the place in yourself
That always knew We’d meet again.
