A devoted foodie with keen interest in wild life, music,…
Assam’s electronic music scene is making waves nationally with three talented artists, Aditya Upadhyaya, Dibyajit Ray, and Nobajyoty Boruah, securing spots as finalists in ‘Resonate: The EDM Challenge’ at WAVES 2025.
Assam’s electronic music scene is making waves (pun intended) on the national stage, with not one, not two, but three trailblazing artists from the state clinching spots among the Top 10 finalists of the prestigious ‘Resonate: The EDM Challenge’. This competition, a key highlight of the ‘Create in India’ initiative under the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, has turned heads in the industry, proving that talent truly knows no bounds — not even the mighty Brahmaputra!
The three finalists — Aditya Upadhyaya from Guwahati, Dibyajit Ray from Bongaigaon, and Nobajyoty Boruah from Lakhimpur — are not just representatives of their home state, but ambassadors of the vibrant and dynamic electronic music community hailing from India’s Northeastern region. Their selection is no small feat, especially considering the stiff competition they faced from both national and international talent.
WAVES 2025, scheduled to take place in Mumbai from May 1–4, is set to be a game-changing event for the music and entertainment industry, with the top finalists set to perform live. The competition, organised by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in collaboration with the Indian Music Industry (IMI), aims to shine a spotlight on innovation and originality in the world of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). With electronic music rapidly gaining popularity, ‘Resonate’ is making its mark as a launchpad for the next generation of talent in the industry.
The journey to the final 10 has been nothing short of thrilling. The selection process, led by an esteemed panel of music industry professionals, was as intense as a drop in a dubstep track. And while the finalists’ names were only announced on April 12, the excitement was palpable in Assam, where the news has sparked a sense of pride and anticipation. After all, these three artists are not just making a name for themselves—they’re putting Assam on the electronic music map.
One of the standout figures among the finalists is Nobajyoty Boruah, whose unconventional route into the music industry has piqued the interest of many. Nobajyoty’s journey began in the most 21st-century way imaginable: YouTube tutorials. “I started my musical journey inspired by the rise of Electronic Music and learned music production through YouTube before pursuing professional audio engineering,” he shared. And if that isn’t a testament to the power of modern learning, I don’t know what is!
Having honed his craft in Chennai and Bangalore, Nobajyoty’s influences range from the legendary AR Rahman and Amit Trivedi to global EDM giants like Skrillex and Zedd. His proudest achievement? An official remix of Salim–Sulaiman’s ‘Eik Martaba’, which was released through Merchant Records and distributed by Warner Music India. Talk about starting small and thinking big!
Aditya Upadhyaya, another finalist, is equally elated about the opportunity WAVES offers to emerging artists in India. “The EDM community in India is still growing, and WAVES is a great platform for us. I’m grateful to be in the Top 10, and this could very well be the turning point of my career,” he said. With his experimental approach to music production, Aditya aims to help the Indian EDM scene break free from traditional boundaries and forge a sound that is uniquely Indian, yet globally resonant.
For all three artists, their success in ‘Resonate: The EDM Challenge’ is more than just a personal achievement; it is a win for the Assamese electronic music scene and for the Northeast as a whole. It highlights the region’s rich cultural diversity, creativity, and a knack for blending tradition with modernity — all set to a pulsating beat.
WAVES 2025, set to host the very first World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit, is gearing up to become the ultimate gathering for creatives across various industries, from music and films to gaming and digital media. As India continues to carve out a reputation as a hub for content creation and technological innovation, the EDM community’s growing influence is an exciting sign of things to come.
And as for the finalists, they’re sure to be dancing all the way to Mumbai, where they’ll take the stage and prove that Assam’s electronic music scene is here to stay. Who knows? One of them might just be the next big name in EDM — and if you’re lucky enough to catch their live set at WAVES, you might say, “I knew them when…”
In the world of EDM, sometimes the most electrifying beats come from the unlikeliest of places. Keep an eye out, because Assam’s electronic music revolution is just getting started — and it’s coming to a stage near you!
