'Run for Khecheopalri Lake' Marathon on May 11

Join the “Run for Khecheopalri Lake” marathon on May 11, 2025, in Gyalshing district, Sikkim. Celebrate the 50th year of Statehood, promote sustainable tourism, and enjoy a scenic race around the Ramsar-designated Khecheopalri Lake.

I was first introduced to the mystical charms of Khecheopalri Lake by my dear friend, Prakriti Pradhan—you know, the one I once waxed lyrical about, the marvellous lady who runs Rangbul La, that slice of heaven tucked away in Darjeeling. As it happens, after running a marathon (as one does on a casual weekend), Prakriti decided to trot over to Khecheopalri Lake. When she described it to me, her words painted such a vivid picture that I almost packed my bags that very minute. Alas, my brain gave my heart the old heave-ho, and I found myself back in Calcutta, nursing a cup of tea and dreams of what could’ve been.

Fast-forward to now, and lo and behold! News arrives of a marathon titled “Run for Khecheopalri Lake”. Needless to say, my excitement shot up faster than a cork out of a cheap bottle of prosecco. So, here’s the full lowdown for you lovely lot.

Mark your calendars for 11th May 2025, because Khecheopalri, that shimmering jewel nestled in the Gyalshing district, is hosting the much-anticipated “Run for Khecheopalri Lake” marathon, part of Sikkim’s 50th year of Statehood celebrations. It’s not every day you get to pair your running shoes with a side of spirituality, a splash of ecological awareness, and some top-notch sightseeing!

The whole shebang is being organised by the Khachoedpalri Pokhari Sangrakshan Samiti (KPSS)—try saying that after a few pints—under the watchful eye of the Gyalshing Territorial Division of the Forest and Environment Department. With Tourism and Ecclesiastical Affairs departments jumping on the bandwagon too, it’s shaping up to be quite the knees-up (minus the knees giving way, one hopes).

Earlier this week, Dr Manjunath, the CCF-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden (a title as hefty as his responsibilities) popped over from Gangtok to give things the once-over. Accompanied by DFO (T) Kshitij Saxena, the indefatigable Range Officer (KNP/T) Tenzing W. Bhutia, and a whole gaggle of panchayat members and local stakeholders, the visit had a bit of a village fête meets United Nations summit feel to it. They even checked out the new forest office-cum-reading corner at Khecheopalri—because why not mix a little tree-hugging with a spot of page-turning?

Now, for the uninitiated, Khecheopalri Lake isn’t just another pretty face. It’s recently been crowned Sikkim’s first Ramsar Site, meaning it’s now recognised as a wetland of international importance. Quite the feather in Sikkim’s cap, wouldn’t you say?

As for the marathon itself, it’s set to be an absolute corker. There are two main races: a 24-kilometre run from Yuksam to the lake for those who fancy stretching their legs and lungs, and a spiritual eight-kilometre run involving seven circumambulations of the lake itself. Perfect for those who want to jog, jog their memory, and jog their karma all in one go.

But don’t be fooled—this isn’t just about breaking a sweat. It’s about raising awareness for sustainable tourism, that unsung hero who makes sure we don’t turn paradise into a rubbish tip. The organisers are keen to drum home the importance of preserving the lake’s spiritual and ecological sanctity.

Backing the event are local heroes like the Yuksam Tourism Development Committee (YTDC), Friends Forever Sporting Club, Darkar Tashiding Motorcycle Club, and MKC Chojo. It’s safe to say, the whole community’s pulling together tighter than a pair of spandex leggings on race day.

Now, onto the prizes—because who doesn’t love a bit of bling for their efforts? Winners across various categories will bag cash prizes, and every brave soul who takes part will receive a commemorative medal and a quirky souvenir. A little something to show off next time you’re at the pub, preferably over a large plate of chips and stories of how you conquered mountains (literally).
