Purple Line Metro To Run At An Interval Of 22 minutes

Kolkata Metro has announced increased train frequency on the Purple Line between Joka and Majerhat, reducing the interval from 50 to 22 minutes.

Kolkata Metro, in a move sure to earn a few polite claps and maybe even a celebratory chai toast, has announced that trains on the elusive Purple Line will now come more frequently—nearly twice as often, in fact.

Starting Monday, the Joka-Majerhat stretch will see 40 services zipping back and forth at a sprightly interval of 22 minutes. That’s a rather smashing upgrade from the former 18 trains every 50 minutes—which, let’s be honest, felt more like a tea break at a government office than a public transport schedule.

Currently, the Purple Line is something of a loner in the metro family—a sort of eccentric uncle who only shows up on weekdays and keeps to the south-western corners of the city. With construction still underway from Majerhat to Esplanade, it’s patiently awaiting its grand reunion with the Blue and Green Lines. Think long-lost cousins coming together over Sunday lunch—except, well, not on Sundays, because the Purple Line takes the weekend off. Yes, Saturdays and Sundays remain sacred days of rest for this particularly shy member of Kolkata’s metro clan.

Officials, with the sort of enthusiasm usually reserved for cricket scores and Durga Pujo planning, announced the news on Saturday. And while the Purple Line may not yet stretch into the heart of the city, it appears to be slowly getting its act together—stiff upper lip and all.

So, come Monday, commuters between Joka and Majerhat can spend a bit less time twiddling their thumbs and a bit more time muttering about the humidity. All in all, a step in the right direction—or at least a slightly faster trundle.

And who knows? With the way things are shaping up, we might one day see the Purple Line galloping through the city with the verve of a double-decker on College Street. Until then, enjoy the 22-minute charm offensive—Monday to Friday only, of course. Let’s not get too carried away.
