Mountain Rush roars into Sikkim with its first-ever TSD car rally, powered by JK Tyre. From Formula 4 thrills to superbike stunts, discover how this high-octane motorsport carnival is transforming the quiet Himalayan state into a hub of speed, style, and adrenaline.

Hold on to your bobble hats, folks — Sikkim is about to get a proper motoring makeover. For the first time ever, the serene hills of this picturesque state will echo with the roar of engines and the squeal of tyres, as the Mountain Rush Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) car rally makes its grand debut from the 23rd of April.

But before drivers even get the chance to argue over the satnav or whose fault it was they missed that last turn, title sponsor JK Tyre has decided to crank the excitement up a few notches with the Indian Racing Festival – A Carnival of Total Control. No, it’s not a yoga workshop. It’s a high-octane motorsport gala being hosted at the Burtuk Helipad today on Tuesday evening — which promises to be more action-packed than a Jeremy Clarkson Twitter feud.

According to a press release that arrived smelling faintly of burnt rubber and ambition, the show will feature everything from FIA-accredited Indian Formula 4 beasts to Indian Racing League cars that look like they were designed by people with severe allergies to braking. And if that’s not enough to rev your metaphorical engine, the line-up also boasts ten-year-old karting prodigies and seasoned rallying legends, all revved up and raring to go.

“Expect jaw-dropping drifting displays in Lexuses and BMWs,” say the organisers — though one sincerely hopes it doesn’t all end in a polite apology and a phone call to the insurance company. Add to that some frankly death-defying stunts on superbikes and modified stunt cars, and you’ve got yourself an evening that’s not for the faint of clutch.

Festivities kick off at 3:30 pm and are open to the public, so if you hear a loud roar and feel the earth tremble, fear not — it’s not the Yeti returning, it’s just horsepower in action. The evening’s pièce de résistance? The official flag-off will be done by dignitaries, flanked by motorsport icons and pint-sized karting sensations who can probably parallel park better than the rest of us.

Sanjay Sharma, who heads Corporate Communication & Motorsport at JK Tyre, is positively beaming with pride:
“As Sikkim celebrates 50 glorious years as a State of India, we’re chuffed to be part of this historic occasion. We’re here to fuel the thrill, amplify the cheer, and wish every participant an unforgettable, action-packed journey,” he said, probably while still buzzing from the smell of petrol and possibility.

The main event — the Mountain Rush rally itself — is organised by Summit Times and Service to Mankind (not a bad name for a group responsible for lots of vroom-vroom), in partnership with the Government of Sikkim. Rallyists will set off at the crack of dawn (7 am, to be precise) from Ridge Park on April 23 and weave their way across Sikkim’s dazzling terrain — from Gangtok to Lachung, then to Rabongla, onward to Soreng, and finally back to Gangtok for a well-earned cuppa and a closing ceremony at MG Marg on April 26.

Puran Tamang, Editor of Summit Times and chief organiser, didn’t mince his words when it came to thanking the government and JK Tyre for supporting what was once just a wild idea whispered over momos and milky tea.
“Organising Sikkim’s first TSD Rally would have remained a daydream without the government’s encouragement,” Tamang shared, presumably while brushing rally dust off his shoulders. “JK Tyre hopped on board faster than a Mini Cooper on a downhill sprint.”

Over 50 teams from across the country have signed up to test their mettle — and their map-reading skills — with a prize pot of Rs. 8 lakh up for grabs. Categories include everything from the seriously seasoned National and Open Expert divisions to the Best Novice Team and Couples category (because nothing says relationship bonding like arguing over who missed the checkpoint).

Scrutineering — the motorsport equivalent of a full-body pat down — will be conducted by FMSCI officials at the Government Law College in Burtuk from 9 am on April 22. One imagines many a bonnet will be lifted, many a tyre kicked, and more than a few eyebrows raised.

All in all, it’s shaping up to be a proper motoring knees-up in the hills. So whether you’re a rally nut, a petrolhead, or just here for the popcorn and power slides, Mountain Rush promises to be one for the books. Just remember to pack a jacket — it may be fast, but it’s still Sikkim, and the hills do love a cheeky chill.

At East India Story, we’re not just about what bleeds or leads. We’re about what inspires, surprises, and reminds us all that across mountains, cultures, —there’s more that connects us than divides us.
