Mizoram Pops the Cork on Regulated Wine Production
A devoted foodie with keen interest in wild life, music,…
Mizoram takes a bold yet culturally mindful step towards economic growth by promoting high-quality wine production using local fruits, following an amendment to the Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019.
Well, it appears the good folks of Mizoram have decided itâs time to stop crying over spilt toddy and raise a proper glass instead. In a move that has left teetotal grannies clutching their rosaries and fruit farmers rubbing their hands with glee, the State Government has amended the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019 â and the result is nothing short of a corker.
At a symposium that was less âgloom and doomâ and more âvino and visionâ, Agriculture Minister laid it all out like a Sunday roast. The State, he declared with the enthusiasm of a man whoâs just discovered his backyard is sitting on a potential vineyard, is gearing up to make high-quality wine from its lush local produce. Grapes, bananas, pineapples, and even passion fruit â all are now on the guest list for Mizoramâs upcoming wine revolution.
And before anyone starts fretting about the corruption of Mizo values with visions of tipsy grandads singing karaoke on church steps, the Minister was quick to assure: all this would be done âin alignment with Mizo traditions and values.â In short, no one’s going to swap hymns for hangovers. Phew.
The daylong event â titled with all the zing of a research paper, âBuilding Sustainable Wine Industry in Mizoram: Policy Initiatives and Recommendationâ â brought together everyone from grape growers in Champhai and Hnahlan to scientists, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs and those clever souls from the All India Wine Production Association. Presumably, there was much nodding of heads, a smattering of PowerPoint, and perhaps a discreet clink of glasses once the cameras were off.
Now, letâs be honest â for a state thatâs long tiptoed around the subject of alcohol like itâs a sleeping bear, this is a rather bold leap. But in these uncertain economic times, a glass of homegrown wine might just be the tonic needed. After all, why let those luscious grapes go to waste when they could be bottled, labelled, and proudly sipped in drawing rooms and five-star hotels alike?
Technology, sustainability, and a good splash of tradition are the name of the game. And if all goes to plan, Mizoram may soon be giving Napa Valley a gentle nudge and saying, âMove over, darling â weâve got pineapples and passion fruit.â
So hereâs to local farmers finally getting their grapes’ worth, to economic growth with a hint of oak, and to Mizoram â proving that progress can indeed be fermented, bottled, and perhaps enjoyed in moderation with a bit of smoked pork on the side.
Bottoms up!
