A girl reflecting on life and personal growth

Writer Emily Zorinmawii captures the quiet struggles and hidden expectations young women navigate daily. Her reflection highlights how safety concerns, societal pressure, and unseen resilience shape a girl’s journey toward finding her true place.

People often say life is hard, and they’re right. Every person faces struggles that shape who they become. But I think life can feel a little different when you’re a girl. The challenges may not always be visible, and they may not always be spoken about, but they exist in quiet moments that many people never notice.

Growing up, I realized that girls are expected to carry so many things without complaining. We are taught to be kind, respectful, careful, and understanding. We are expected to stay strong even when we’re exhausted, smile even when we’re hurting, and remain silent because speaking up might be seen as being “too much.” Somewhere along the way, many of us learn to hide our emotions instead of expressing them. We become experts at pretending everything is fine because that’s often what is expected of us.

Sometimes it feels like no matter what we do, someone will always have something to say. If we’re quiet, we’re shy. If we’re confident, we’re arrogant. If we care deeply, we’re emotional. If we don’t, we’re cold. If we dream big, we’re told to be realistic. It often feels as though there is an invisible list of expectations that changes depending on who is watching. Trying to meet every expectation is exhausting, and eventually we realize that pleasing everyone is impossible.

Sometimes I wonder what it feels like to leave home without someone worrying about your safety. As girls, we’re protected everywhere we go, told not to stay out too late, and reminded to be careful every step of the way. We understand that these rules come from love, but there are moments when we wish we could enjoy the same freedom that many boys seem to have. To go out without every decision being shaped by concerns about our safety.

I remember asking my parents if I could stay out just a little longer with my friends. The answer was almost always, “It’s getting late.” I never blamed them because I knew it came from love and concern. Still, I couldn’t help noticing that my brother wasn’t asked the same questions. It wasn’t about wanting fewer rules. It was about wondering what freedom felt like when your safety wasn’t always the first concern. Moments like these made me realize that being a girl often means growing up with different expectations, even within the same home.

As girls, we often learn to be cautious in ways that become second nature. We think twice before walking alone, before trusting strangers, before returning home late, or even before sharing our opinions openly. These habits become so normal that we rarely stop to question them. They are simply woven into our everyday lives.

There are days when life feels unfair. There are moments when I wonder why girls have to think twice before doing things that others do without fear. There are times when our efforts are overlooked, our voices are interrupted, or our feelings are dismissed as overreactions. These moments may seem small on their own, but together they become experiences that shape the way we see ourselves and the world around us.

Yet despite all of this, I have seen something remarkable in girls. I have seen them continue to chase their dreams even after being told they couldn’t. I have seen them encourage others while quietly carrying burdens of their own. I have seen them sacrifice for their families, stand by their friends, and continue moving forward after heartbreak, disappointment, and failure. Strength does not always look loud. Sometimes it looks like getting out of bed after a difficult day. Sometimes it looks like choosing kindness even when life has not been kind in return.

Perhaps that is what makes girls stronger than we realize. Not because life is easy, but because we continue to move forward even when it isn’t. We learn, we adapt, and we grow through every challenge placed before us. We may stumble, we may question ourselves, and we may even feel like giving up, but somehow we find the courage to keep going.

Life isn’t always fair, especially for girls. However, every challenge teaches us something. Every obstacle makes us a little wiser, a little stronger, and a little more determined to become the person we want to be. The difficulties we face do not define our worth. Instead, they reveal our resilience, our compassion, and our ability to rise again.

This isn’t a complaint about being a girl. It’s simply a reminder that behind every smile, there may be battles no one else sees. Every girl has a story that others know nothing about. Some carry grief, some carry pressure, some carry expectations, and some carry dreams that they are still fighting to achieve. Their strength is often quiet, but it is no less real.

Being a girl is not about proving that we are stronger than anyone else. It is about recognizing that our experiences matter, our voices deserve to be heard, and our dreams deserve the same chance to flourish. Life may not always be fair, but that doesn’t mean we stop believing in ourselves. At the end of the day, we’re just girls trying to find our place in the world. We stumble, we learn, we laugh, we cry, and somehow, we keep moving forward.
