Jadavpur University’s accessible library for visually impaired students gets a major upgrade, thanks to the initiative of two alumni and the Global Jadavpur University Alumni Foundation. Over ₹38 lakh raised for modernisation and long-term upkeep.

Jadavpur University’s accessible library for visually impaired students has just had a jolly good spruce-up, thanks to the initiative of two of its former pupils who decided to roll up their sleeves and give back in a big way.

Spearheading the effort are alumni Bishnu Dhandhaniya, associated with the Belur branch of a voluntary organisation, and Ranjit Chakraborty, a member of the Danville-San Ramon branch of the same group and President of the Global Jadavpur University Alumni Foundation. Between the pair of them, they’ve managed to set the wheels in motion for a remarkable transformation of the facility.

Speaking on Friday, Mr Chakraborty revealed that more than ₹38 lakh has been raised for the purpose—no small beer by any measure. These funds will not only support the immediate upgrades but also help set up a dedicated kitty to manage the library’s operations and upkeep in the long run. The Global Jadavpur University Alumni Foundation will take the reins on this front.

The accessible library, a lifeline for over 150 visually impaired students of the university, had been crying out for modernisation. It’s not just about the books—it’s about creating a level playing field. As Amitava Dutta, the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, put it, “Visually impaired students should have the same opportunities as anyone else. This modern library will go a long way in supporting their educational journey.”

Thanks to this upgrade, the library is no longer just a quiet corner to catch up on readings—it’s fast becoming a beacon of inclusivity and innovation. From enhanced digital resources to tactile reading materials, the facility is now equipped to ensure students aren’t left out in the cold.

All in all, it’s a sterling example of how a spot of goodwill, a touch of old-school loyalty, and a fair bit of elbow grease can come together to make a world of difference. Hats off to the alumni who’ve turned the page on the library’s past and helped write a more accessible future.
