Family of a Abhaya, the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College, alleges coercion by authorities into a forced cremation. The father claims the police pressured them, surrounding their home with officers, and forced them to cremate her body hastily. A candlelight vigil was held in protest, demanding justice.
In a harrowing tale of grief compounded by injustice, the father of the Kolkata doctor who was raped and murdered within the walls of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has come forward with troubling allegations. The 31-year-old trainee doctor’s life was tragically cut short, and now family of Abhaya accuses the authorities of forcing them to cremate her body against their will, adding insult to unimaginable injury.
The father, speaking to reporters, claimed he had wished to preserve his daughter’s body, a decision driven by the deep emotional shock of her brutal murder. However, according to him, an overwhelming police presence left the family with no choice but to proceed with an immediate cremation. “We wanted the body preserved,” he explained, “but the pressure was unbearable. Some 300-400 policemen surrounded us at our home, and they created a situation that left us with no option but to cremate her.”
The father’s words painted a bleak picture of intimidation and coercion. The family of Abhaya had barely returned home with their daughter’s body when they were met with a sea of officers standing outside their door. The father claimed the atmosphere was so stifling that it felt like they had been boxed in, unable to take any course of action other than the one being dictated to them.
The cremation itself, he said, was hurried and carried out without the family of Abhaya being consulted about payment, a further detail that adds to the sense of powerlessness they now feel. As if this weren’t enough, the father also alleged that police officers tried to have him sign a blank sheet of paper, an alarming act that suggests there may be more layers of wrongdoing lurking beneath the surface. Refusing to play ball, he tore up the paper.
The family of Abhaya, still raw with grief, joined a candlelight protest at the very site where the doctor’s tragic end occurred. Citizens and medics alike rallied in solidarity, their collective grief and anger palpable as the flickering candlelight illuminated a deep sense of loss. There’s a bitter irony in the fact that such a tragedy should happen in a place meant to be a beacon of healing.
The trauma, it seems, didn’t stop with the brutal crime itself but extended into the treatment of the victim’s family – a family already grappling with the unthinkable. The father’s accusations of police offering money and trying to pressure the family further underscore the depths of despair and helplessness they feel. Here also would like to mention that few days back the parents debunked the involvement of police offering them money. So truth remains unknown.
As the days wear on, one can only hope that justice will be served, not just for the victim, but also for her grieving family. Yet, as things stand, it seems the family has been caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, left grappling with a loss that has been made all the more painful by the events that followed.
In the coming days, all eyes will be on the authorities and how they respond to these disturbing claims. But in the heart of Kolkata, where the tragic events unfolded, the candles of protest continue to burn, flickering with both grief and hope – a hope that justice, though delayed, will not be denied.
