EPIC Public School in Cooch Behar has initiated a programme to educate children about ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’, ensuring they understand personal boundaries and can protect themselves from abuse.

The shocking incidents across India of rape and women abuse have sent shivers down the spine of parents across the nation, raising immediate concerns about the safety and well-being of their children. One can’t help but feel the weight of responsibility as we consider the importance of educating children about the difference between ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’—an essential step to ensure they grow up with the knowledge needed to safeguard themselves.

Understanding the difference is as crucial as knowing right from wrong. A ‘good touch’ is any touch that brings comfort, security, and happiness—like a hug from a loving parent or a kiss from a doting grandparent. It makes a child feel safe, protected, and cherished. A ‘bad touch’, on the other hand, brings about discomfort, fear, or confusion. Whether it’s an unwelcome touch from an adult or being told to keep something secret, these are the tell-tale signs that something’s amiss.

In most cases, young schoolchildren aren’t naturally attuned to the distinction between these touches. The innocence of youth makes them vulnerable, easy targets for those who prey on trust. What’s particularly disturbing is that these predators are often found within the child’s own family or close circle. The shock of betrayal is what silences many victims, making it difficult for them to speak out about their experiences. This silence must be broken.

Taking the bull by the horns, EPIC Public School in Cooch Behar has risen to the occasion, setting an example for schools across the country. Understanding the need to educate children early on, they’ve rolled out a special programme dedicated to teaching students about the concept of good and bad touch. The initiative includes interactive training sessions, with teachers providing clear and age-appropriate explanations to both boys and girls, helping them to recognise when a touch is inappropriate.

To reach an even wider audience, the school has gone one step further, releasing an educational video on their Facebook page.  We are sharing the link to the video for our readers.

In today’s world, it’s no good burying one’s head in the sand, hoping the issue will go away. Parents and educators alike must be proactive in equipping children with the knowledge to understand their own bodies and personal boundaries. After all, forewarned is forearmed.

As we digest the grim reality of the R.G. Kar incident, let it serve as a stark reminder that safeguarding our children begins with communication, education, and vigilance. Our children must not only learn the difference between good and bad touch but also feel empowered to speak out when something feels off. In doing so, we can create a safer world for them to grow up in—where trust isn’t taken advantage of, and innocence is preserved.

If ever there was a time to act, it’s now.
