Domestic Help Caught After Posting a Facebook Photo

A devoted foodie with keen interest in wild life, music,…
A cheeky tale from Kolkata’s Behala, where a former domestic help was caught after posting a Facebook photo wearing stolen gold earrings.
It appears the phrase “caught red-handed” has had a bit of a makeover in Behala — this time, it’s more “caught gold-lobed.” In a tale that’s got more twists than a soap opera and more sparkle than a Diwali display, a former domestic help has been nabbed for allegedly pinching a pair of gold earrings… only to grass herself up on Facebook!
Yes, you heard it right. The incident unfolded in the quiet lanes of Kolkata’s Behala, where Sanchita Mukhopadhyay, a resident of the posh Pornoshree area, noticed something distinctly familiar glinting on her social media feed. There, smiling cheekily from behind a filter or two, was her former help, Purnima Mondal, donning a pair of earrings that looked suspiciously like the ones that had vanished from her home nearly six months ago.
Talk about making a spectacle of oneself.
Purnima, who hails from Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas, had been employed at the Mukhopadhyay residence until around half a year ago, when she abruptly quit her job. Not long after her dramatic exit (which we assume involved a vague excuse and a missing mop), the household realised two pairs of gold earrings had mysteriously disappeared. A few mutterings about misplacing them were exchanged, as is customary in such middle-class mysteries, but the trail soon went cold.
Until now.
Upon spotting the blingy betrayal online — no doubt sandwiched between a WhatsApp forward and a cat video — Sanchita’s suspicions flared up like a badly wired chandelier. She promptly marched down to the Pornoshree police station, armed with a screenshot and a look that could curdle milk. In no time, the police were on the case, launching an operation that led them straight to Purnima’s doorstep in Bishnupur.
And lo and behold — not only did they recover the two pairs of earrings, but also a gold ring that had vanished under the radar entirely. The ring, engraved with the name of Sanchita’s husband, Sameer, was apparently pinched during the great earring exodus — though the Mukhopadhyays hadn’t even realised it was missing. Typical, really. You only notice what’s gone when someone else starts flaunting it like it’s the Met Gala.
Purnima has since been produced in court and will be cooling her heels in judicial custody till 18 April, presumably without access to social media — or accessories.
Now, dear readers, let this be a cautionary tale for all. If you must steal, at least don’t post it on Facebook. And if you must post on Facebook, maybe stick to selfies without the loot. Because as the old saying goes: “Give a thief enough rope… and she’ll post it on her timeline.”
Moral of the story: Crime doesn’t pay — but it might just get you a few likes before the cops come knocking.
