Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) declares Class XII results for Arts, Science, Commerce and Vocational streams. With over 24,000 students passing, top ranks were bagged by students from Shillong’s leading schools. Read with a dash of British humour and hill-state charm.
There must’ve been quite the celebratory racket in the hills of Meghalaya on Monday—possibly enough to set off a minor landslide—when the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) finally declared the results of the Class XII examinations across the Arts, Science, Commerce, and Vocational streams. It was a red-letter day for some 29,278 students who sat for the exams, with a commendable 24,039 of them passing with flying colours—or at least enough shades to warrant a decent party and a few ‘I told you so’s from proud aunties.
Let’s do the maths, shall we? A breakdown of the candidates reveals that 22,835 students gave Arts a go, 3,922 took a punt on Science, 2,501 dived into Commerce, and 20 (yes, just twenty—probably a classroom that could fit into that old Ambassador taxi in Shillong tried their luck with the Vocational stream. Out of these, the Arts stream saw a rather refined 82.05% pass rate—proof that poetry and philosophy still have a fighting chance in today’s world. Science, that old reliable, clocked in at 82.94%, and Commerce followed close behind with 81.28%. Vocational students, though few and far between, managed a top-notch 85%—clearly small but mighty.
Now, speaking of mighty, let’s tip our collective mortarboards to the top performers. In the Arts stream, it was a dead heat at the top. Albert Mate and Idawanplishisha Swer, both from St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, grabbed first place with an identical 455 marks. Not far behind, Nelly Mary Khymdeit from St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh took second place, while Safilia Wahlang of St. Anthony’s, Shillong claimed third—clearly a school that has no shortage of budding intellectuals.
The Science stream saw young Saptarshi Bhattacharjee of Laban Bengalee Boys’ HSS, Shillong, galloping past the finish line with a whopping 483 marks. If anyone deserves a solid ‘Well done, young man!’ it’s him. Hot on his heels were Drishana Roychoudhury and Shweta Sarma, both from St. Anthony’s, Shillong—again, clearly a hotspot of academic wizardry.
In Commerce, the top spot went to Disha Chokhani from the ever-reliable St. Anthony’s with 481 marks, followed by Nishan Talukdar and Dipankar Barua, both of Laban Bengalee Boys’ HSS. One might say the financial future of Meghalaya is in good hands—assuming they don’t all run off to become YouTubers.
Of course, while these numbers dazzle and inspire, it’s also worth noting that the urban centres—Shillong being the perennial heavyweight—dominated the top spots. It seems the capital’s chalk and talk still trumps the rest. One can only hope that with more equitable resources, students from rural belts might soon give their city cousins a good run for their money.
So, what’s next for these bright young sparks? University? Civil services? Or a year off to ponder life’s big questions. Whatever the case, let’s not forget that behind every high scorer lies a mountain of Maggi noodles, late-night cramming, last-minute preparations, and the occasional existential crisis.
In the meantime, dear students, take a well-deserved bow, pour yourself a cup of tea, and bask in your moment. You’ve earned it.
