Oscar Piastri storms to victory at the Miami Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri storms to victory at the Miami Grand Prix in a dominant McLaren one-two, overtaking rivals and title expectations with classic Aussie grit to boot. Read how he’s become the frontrunner in this year’s F1 title race.

If ever there was a Sunday drive that screamed “title contender”, Oscar Piastri ’s Miami Grand Prix masterclass was it. Starting from fourth and finishing on the top step, the Aussie delivered a performance that was less Grand Prix and more grand proclamation – he’s here, he’s quick, and he’s not playing second fiddle to anyone.

The McLaren garage will be popping more corks than a posh Henley picnic after their one-two finish, but it was Piastri who had everyone chattering like it was free wine at a book club. He didn’t just win – he blitzed it. Cool as a cucumber in a freezer, the lad drove with the sort of unflappable poise that would make James Bond look like a flustered tourist.

And poor Lando Norris? Well, his hopes were scuppered before he’d even found second gear. One moment he was rubbing shoulders with Max Verstappen off the line, the next he was sightseeing in sixth, courtesy of a gentle Verstappen squeeze that sent him grass-hopping. The stewards shrugged – “racing incident,” they said – but Norris might have used slightly spicier language.

Meanwhile, George Russell quietly went about his business in the Mercedes, snatching third like a bloke who nips in for the last sausage roll at Greggs. Verstappen, who started on pole, was left stewing in fourth, probably wondering why his Red Bull suddenly felt more Vauxhall Corsa than championship chariot.

Lewis Hamilton, bless him, had yet another afternoon that can only be described as “character building.” His radio exchanges with Ferrari were testier than a queue jumper. “Have a tea break while you’re at it,” he snarked when the pit wall dithered. If sarcasm could win races, Lewis would have lapped the field.

Back to Piastri though – he wasn’t just good, he was ruddy magnificent. His move on Verstappen on lap 14 was as brave as it was  brilliant, and from there he vanished up the road faster than last year’s budget surplus. When Norris finally freed himself from Verstappen’s clutches, Piastri had already built a nine-second cushion – or as it’s known in F1, “a fortnight”.

Not bad for a bloke who two years ago was being lapped for fun in Miami. “I think we got lapped twice,” he recalled. This year? He finished 37 seconds up the road from third place. That’s not just improvement – that’s a full-blown glow-up.

The Lego-car parade before the race – yes, actual full-size Lego F1 cars – was a bit of cheeky Miami razzmatazz, but when the plastic bricks were parked and the lights went out, it was clear who’s now building something big. The McLaren looked the class of the field, and Piastri looked every inch a champion-in-waiting. He now leads Norris by 16 points, with Verstappen a whopping 32 behind. Early days, but if this was a game of Monopoly, Piastri just nabbed Mayfair.

Red Bull did throw a bit of a wobbly post-race, protesting Russell for allegedly ignoring yellow flags during a Virtual Safety Car. The stewards gave it a look, had a nice cup of tea, and binned it. Nothing doing.

As for Ferrari, the soap opera continues. Leclerc was asked to let Hamilton through – eventually – only for the team to reverse the decision later, leaving Lewis to wonder aloud whether they fancied giving everyone a go. The Scuderia, it must be said, are still more “Carry On Pitlane” than strategic maestros.

But for now, it’s Oscar Piastri who walks away from the Hard Rock Stadium with the headlines, the champagne, and, dare we say it, the wind in his title-challenging sails. From underdog to top dog, he’s not just in the fight – he might just win the whole blooming thing.
