Uncover the dark underbelly of the R G Kar rape and murder case, as the CBI investigation unravels a clandestine biomedical waste smuggling operation linked to former principal Sandip Ghosh. Explore the intricate web of corruption, financial scams, and shocking revelations that have left the nation in awe.
The sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that has been investigating the R G Kar rape and murder case for more than three weeks now, have stumbled upon several crucial leads that would obviously nail the now-jailed former principal Sandip Ghosh. Well, all this has been passe.
Why? Because readers, viewers of various TV channels and news reports have categorically stated this. However, what has so far not been talked about or the sleuths have declined to divulge is the nature of sensitive information that they have succeeded in culling through the interrogation of a key person (identity deliberately being fudged) and Prasun Chatterjee, the ‘right-hand’ man & close confidante of Sandip Ghosh.
Before I delve deeper, I would request the readers to minutely observe one tiny yet grave observation of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud during the second hearing of the case at the Supreme Court.
While asking the CBI to continue the investigation and submit a fresh status report in a sealed envelope on 17th September, 2024, he observed that it would not be proper to interfere in the investigation at this stage as “the CBI seems to be making good progress”.
When the last hearing was conducted on September 9 last, the CBI was understood to have hinted that it had stumbled on a can of worms and would require little more time to carefully open the can so that the worms could hardly get any opportunity to reorganise and ‘fly out.’
The subsequent arrest of the Officer-in-Charge of Tala Police Station under Calcutta Police Abhijit Mandal and fresh custody of Sandip Ghosh speak volumes about this and they are more than the tip of the iceberg.
“The ghastly crime committed and burgeoning layers of the financial scam are so intricately connected that it would leave any sane person appalled in awe and disbelief,” observed one source who spoke to eastindiastory.com on a strict condition of anonymity.
Further, the level these layers have reached, is certain to leave everyone crestfallen. Now, what the CBI is desperately endeavouring to piece together with unfailing and meticulous ‘stitching’ is whether the 31-year-old victim Tilottoma, accidentally or otherwise, discovered herself wading right into the muck.
Because the nature of torture she underwent would even the pale the horrors of Nirbhaya that shocked the entire nation more than a decade back.
The issue is nothing but a rapidly proliferating business of biomedical waste of R G Kar Medical College & Hospital; and to add twist to the tale, are the two other state-run medical colleges (already under the CBI scanner) which Ghosh had allegedly been trying hard to rope in to expand this ‘empire of waste’ with meticulous planning, reportedly in collusion with the powers-that-be.
“Ghosh could not have dared to resort to this clandestine smuggling of bio-medical wastes on such a grand scale without the blessing of someone who would obviously ensure unflinching protection,” said the source.
What is bio-medical waste? According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), bio- medical waste is a kind of waste generated by health care activities, ranging from used needles and syringes to soiled dressings, body parts, diagnostic samples, blood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and radioactive materials. Of the total amount of waste generated by health care activities, 15 percent is considered hazardous material that may be infectious, chemical or radioactive.
Biomedical waste being a sunrise industry, presents a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to get in on the ground floor of a rapidly growing industrial sector across the world. Because, this waste recycling industry is expected to grow significantly in the coming years as more and more hospitals and other medical facilities adopt recycling programs. And on top of it, it has a huge potential for high profits, but not without risks.
Hence, it is only but natural for Ghosh who had always been rewarded with plum posting, has dared to resort to this trade. The sleuths have unearthed everything, starting from the Bangladesh connection to future expansion plans, thanks to the successful interrogation-(cum-revelation!) of Prasun Chatterjee who has reportedly begun to spill the beans.
One of the seemingly intricate puzzles that the CBI has been working hard to crack is the money trail. The Bangladesh traders, apparently not two but trio, to whom the consignments of medical wastes used to be dispatched, ploughed back part of the profit worth several crores.
That Ghosh is not the lone beneficiary goes without saying; then who else had so far reaped the harvest? This is the one part of the puzzle and the second part being the modus operandi of the transactions and the bank account where the trail has logically ended.
Hawala could obviously be the most probable route; if the profits didn’t have accrued entirely to the accounts of Ghosh, then he must be aware of the rest of the beneficiary or beneficiaries. Ghosh who is so far tightlipped and has consistently tried to mislead the CBI interrogators (Ghosh’s polygraph test report confirms this), finds a real partner-in-crime in Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mandol. The latter too refused to concede that the duo had several rounds of intense conversation in the aftermath of the rape and murder.
Now the main beacon of hope for the CBI is the account of the key person mentioned at the beginning of this report and of course, a string of important revelations by Prasun Chatterjee apart from the incriminating documents and soft copies of the alleged scam unearthed during multiple raids across various places.
What the CBI would be submitting tomorrow to the division bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud in a sealed envelope is anybody’s guess and a well-guarded secret. However, to boost their stand and demand for justice, the junior doctors’ federation has appointed noted lawyer Indira Jaising who would be live streaming the entire proceedings at the court.
Meanwhile, as part of the last ditch effort to strengthen the case on behalf of the West Bengal government at the top court, state chief secretary Manoj Panth mailed another invite, fifth to be precise, to the junior doctors for ‘an open dialogue’ (with two riders) at the residence of the chief minister at Kalighat in south Calcutta at 5 pm today evening. Two riders are clear and categorical – videography and live streaming will strictly be not allowed.
Even though the entire state as well as the nation would await the outcome of the talks with baited breath, sceptics refuse to attach importance to this as this could be another ruse by the state authorities to wriggle themselves out of any charge that might be levelled against them by the opponent lawyer that the authorities failed to make a step forward in diffusing the current impasse between the state government and the body of junior doctors who have been on an indefinite strike since the day of the vicious crime, demanding justice.
