A small tribute to the legendary singer Harry Belafonte, the singer, songwriter, actor, and social activist who left this mortal world yesterday.  His music, infused with Caribbean and American folk traditions, was a powerful force for social justice and inspired audiences around the world. His humorous approach added an extra layer of entertainment to his performances. Though he may have left this world, his music will live on, inspiring future generations to stand up for what is right and effect change.

In my youthful days, when asked to sing a tune, I always ended up singing ‘The Jamaica Farewell’, and today it is time to bid adieu to the Jamaican – Harry Belafonte who left this mortal world yesterday. He may have left us but his music will keep inspiring us, guiding and uplifting us for the coming days. For though he may depart this land, he will live forever with his music.

Belafonte was not just a legendary singer, he was also a brilliant actor and a social activist whose contributions to civil rights will be remembered always. Born on March 1, 1927, in New York City, Belafonte rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s with his unique blend of Caribbean and American folk music, earning him the nickname “King of Calypso.”

Belafonte’s songs are characterized by his rich baritone voice, his ability to tell stories through his music, and his passionate advocacy for social justice. His music drew inspiration from the calypso and folk traditions of the Caribbean, as well as the blues and gospel music of the American South.

One of Belafonte’s most popular songs is “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” which was released in 1956. The song, which tells the story of Jamaican dock workers loading bananas onto a ship, became a cultural phenomenon and is still recognized as one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. The song’s infectious melody and upbeat rhythm make it a timeless classic, but it also has a deeper meaning, highlighting the plight of workers who toil in difficult and dangerous conditions.

Another of Belafonte’s most famous songs is “The Midnight Special,” which was inspired by a traditional folk song about a train that would pass by a prison every night at midnight. The song’s lyrics tell the story of a prisoner who longs to be free and sees the train as a symbol of hope and escape. The song became an anthem for the civil rights movement and was sung by activists in the South as they protested segregation and injustice.

Belafonte’s commitment to social justice is also evident in songs like “We Are the Wave,” which he wrote in the wake of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in China. The song calls for global unity and solidarity in the face of oppression and tyranny, and its powerful message resonated with audiences around the world.

Harry Belafonte’s music is characterized by its ability to transcend cultural boundaries and bring people together in a spirit of unity and compassion. His songs will continue to inspire and uplift listeners, and his legacy as a musician and social activist will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.

The other side of Belafonte was his capability to infuse humor into his songs. Belafonte’s humorous approach can be observed in many of his popular songs. He used to incorporate playful lyrics and catchy melodies that get audiences laughing and dancing along. Belafonte’s humor also extends beyond his songwriting and into his live performances. He has a natural gift for storytelling and often shares humorous anecdotes with his audiences, adding an extra layer of entertainment to his shows.
