A Calender on Soumitra Chatterjee
Apur Panchali the calendar got released to celebrate the multifaceted genius Soumitra Chattopadhyay
Whether as “Apu”, “Felu Mittir”, “Udayan Pandit”, “Mayurbahan”, “Devdas”, Soumitra Chattopadhyay was constant with all the changing characters on screen. He lived his life dealing a vast range of his works being an actor, elocutionist, painter, author, editor, theatre personality and so on. The legendary veteran artist passed away creating a huge gap in the world of cinema.
A wall calendar titled “Apur Panchali” in his memory got released on January 13, at 4 pm at Spices and Sausages (ICCR outlet). It was wealth architect Surojit Kala, Shyam Sundar Company Jewelers (Rupak Saha, Director), Sudipta Chanda‘s (The Dreamers) joint venture with the support of Debasis Mukherjee.
The cover has been illustrated by Sid Ghosh.
Many eminent personalities like Sougata Chattopadhyay (Son of Soumitra Chattopadhyay), Rupak Saha(Dir. Shyam Sundar Company Jewellers), Surojit Kala, Debojyoti Mishra, Devajit Bandyopadhyay, Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee, Riddhi Bandyopadhyay, Gautam Dey ( Regional Director,ICCR,Kolkata) were present at the do.
It can be said that this calendar will become a collection worthy for his admirers by going through the alleys of various works of Soumitra Chattopadhyay. From Ray’s Soumitra to Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Ajay Kar, Asit Sen, the next generation directors like Sandeep Ray, Atanu Ghosh, Anik Dutt, Shiboprosad-Nandita duo’s work, and all the work has fascinated Soumitra in a new way.
The calendar has movie posters, images of booklets. Soumitra used to draw very good paintings. There are various pictures starting from his self-portrait on a page of the calendar. He even wrote several books even edited magazine like “Ekkhon”. It is comprising of various images his literary works. He was a great elocutionist. Gramophone disc label of his recitation of Tagore poems besides record covers of his films also got featured in one page of the same. All in all, this calendar has portrayed Soumitra in all different styles.
So this calendar can be considered as a collector’s delight. Sougata Chattopadhyay said,” I am really happy to be here. My father’s contribution is unfathomable. He would live on through his timeless works. This calendar is also showcasing his multifaceted genius. I am sure his admirers would appreciate it.”
