The Rajkhowa Murders, the chilling true story of Upendra Nath Rajkhowa, an Assamese judge convicted of murdering his family in 1970 will be in screen soon. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and based on Nilutpal Gohain’s bestselling novel, this film delves into a shocking case that stunned India.
Move over, crime thrillers—there’s a new story in town, and this one’s bound to make even the most seasoned detective shudder. It is The Rajkhowa Murders. After the resounding success of Manoj Bajpayee’s Sirf Ek Banda Kafi Hai and Neeraj Pandey’s Special Ops, award-winning writer Deepak Kingrani and Almighty Motion Picture are gearing up to deliver a spine-chiller to rival the best of them. And this one’s based on real-life events, mind you.
The upcoming film, The Rajkhowa Murders, is inspired by the bestselling novel The Rajkhowa Murders – A Case That Shocked India by author Nilutpal Gohain. Now, you’d be forgiven for not knowing about this particularly macabre chapter in Indian history—it’s a case that hasn’t exactly been front-page news since it occurred back in the 1970s. But, it’s one that’ll soon have you gripping the armrest of your cinema seat in abject horror.
Let’s rewind, shall we? The story follows the shocking quadruple murders committed by Upendra Nath Rajkhowa, an Assamese District and Sessions Judge, who was convicted of brutally killing his wife and three daughters in 1970. That’s right, a judge—the man responsible for sending criminals to the gallows—ended up on death row himself. You couldn’t make this stuff up! And yet, nobody could quite figure out why he did it. Even as he stood at the gallows, Rajkhowa kept schtum about his motives, leaving the nation in a state of morbid curiosity.
Enter Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the acting powerhouse who will take on the lead role, delving into Rajkhowa’s twisted mind and recreating the series of events that led to his execution. Now, if Siddiqui’s previous performances are anything to go by, you’ll be on the edge of your seat, peeking through your fingers, wondering what on earth is coming next.
Prabhleen Kaur, founder of Almighty Motion Picture, shared her excitement about the project: “This story explores an event that’s simply unprecedented in Indian history. Imagine—a judge, the very symbol of justice, condemned to death for murdering his own family. No crime like this has ever occurred before in the country, and the way it shocked the nation is something that needs to be captured on screen.”
You don’t say! And if the novel had readers wide-eyed in disbelief, the film promises to dial up the suspense to a full-blown roller-coaster ride. “We at Almighty Motion Picture are thrilled to collaborate with Deepak Kingrani for a visual adaptation that does justice to this harrowing tale,” added Kaur.
Kingrani himself was left stunned by the case. “What drew me to write the script was the shocking paradox—a judge, whose role is to imprison criminals, found guilty of murdering his own family and sentenced to death. The extensive research revealed details that are even more disturbing than the initial reports, and it was a challenge to balance the true horror with the human side of the story.”
It seems this story, while over 50 years old, is more relevant than ever, thanks to the gripping novel that brought the case back into the spotlight. Author Nilutpal Gohain can hardly believe the journey his book has taken: “It was Prabhleen Kaur who saw the potential in this story and acquired the rights even before the book was published. Now that it’s being turned into a film, I’m elated. I mean, it’s not every day a judge stands trial for murder in his own court!”
True enough, and if the initial buzz is anything to go by, The Rajkhowa Murders could well be a blockbuster hit. With a storyline this rich in drama, suspense, and moral ambiguity, it’s bound to keep audiences talking long after the credits roll. So, clear your calendars and brace yourselves—this isn’t just another crime thriller. It’s the story of a man who sat in judgment over others, only to find himself on the wrong side of the law, and history.
