The Eken: Benaras e Bibhishika brings back Anirban Chakrabarti as the beloved detective Eken Babu in a brand-new adventure set in Varanasi. Directed by Joydeep Mukherjee and produced by Hoichoi Studios, the film is set to release on 16 May 2025.

To mark the joyous occasion of Poila Baisakh—the Bengali New Year—the makers of the beloved Eken Babu franchise have unveiled the official motion poster of their latest cinematic outing, The Eken: Benaras e Bibhishika. The film, which sees the quirky sleuth back in action, is set to hit theatres on 16 May.

Helmed by Joydeep Mukherjee and based on the novel by Sujan Dasgupta, the latest chapter in the detective saga transports audiences to the spiritual city of Varanasi, where intrigue and mischief await in equal measure.

Anirban Chakrabarti reprises his role as the delightfully eccentric and unflappably observant Eken Babu, a Bengali gentleman with a penchant for unravelling mysteries in the most unexpected of places. He is once again joined by his loyal companions Promotho and Bapi, played by Somak Ghosh and Suhatro Mukhopadhyay respectively.

The ensemble cast boasts some of Bengali cinema’s finest talents, including Saswata Chatterjee, Ishaa Saha, Gaurav Chakrabarty, Rishav Basu, Debesh Chattopadhyay, Biswanath Basu, Sagnik Chatterjee, Kaushik Hafizee and Sreeja Bhattacharya.

Hoichoi Studios, the banner behind the much-loved detective series, shared the news via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle:

“Eken Babu is returning to the big screen with Hoichoi Studios. Are you ready for a family vacation in Benaras this summer?”

It’s a homecoming of sorts for fans of the franchise, which first arrived on the streaming platform Hoichoi in March 2018. The show was an instant hit, thanks to its light-hearted tone, endearing lead character, and an engaging blend of comedy and mystery.

Following the web series’ success, the Eken Babu universe expanded into feature films. The Eken (2022) saw the sleuth solving a puzzling case in Darjeeling, while its sequel, The Eken: Ruddhaswas Rajasthan (2023), whisked him away to the arid landscapes of Rajasthan.

The Eken: Benaras e Bibhishika forms a key part of Hoichoi Studios’ four-film slate for 2025. Other exciting titles in the pipeline include Kader Kuler Bou by Srijit Roy and Souvik Chakraborty, Kumir Danga directed by Parambrata Chattopadhyay, and Gora-e Gondogol, helmed by Sahana Dutta.

With its winning combination of humour, suspense and cultural charm, The Eken series has firmly etched its place in the hearts of Bengali audiences, both young and old. And now, with a new adventure unfolding in the lanes and ghats of Varanasi, it looks like Eken Babu is all set to win us over—again.
