Shillong Medical College Coming Up Soon

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is set to visit Meghalaya in May for an inspection of the upcoming Shillong Medical College and Hospital.
It seems the stethoscopes are being polished and the white coats dusted off as the National Medical Commission (NMC) is expected to pay a visit to Meghalaya in early May, presumably not for a cup of tea, but for a thorough inspection of the proposed Shillong Medical College and Hospital.
In a review meeting that took place on Wednesday, Meghalaya’s Health Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, told reporters that things are very much ticking along like a well-oiled syringe. According to the Minister, the infrastructure for the Shillong Medical College is already in an “advanced stage” – which in bureaucratic lingo usually means you can almost see it without squinting.
The government, ever the optimist, is keeping its fingers firmly crossed (and no doubt lighting a few candles) in hopes of welcoming the first batch of medical students in the 2025-26 academic session.
Meanwhile, over in Tura, there’s a similarly upbeat tone. Lyngdoh described the progress as “positive” – not quite champagne-popping territory, but certainly not doom-and-gloom. Funding efforts are reportedly being fast-tracked, with both the Tura Civil Hospital and the Tura MCH Hospital earmarked for a bit of a spruce-up. One imagines there’s a fair bit of paint and paperwork involved.
The state government, bless their cotton socks, is rather keen to ensure that both the Tura Civil Hospital and the MCH Hospital stay firmly under its own watchful eye – no handing over the keys just yet. As for how exactly the Tura Medical College will be run, that’s still a bit of a “wait and see” affair, perhaps like a soufflé you’re hoping won’t collapse before the guests arrive.
So, to sum up: spirits are high, spades are digging, and if all goes according to plan (and let’s be honest, when does it ever?), Meghalaya might just have two fully functional medical colleges before long – and not a moment too soon. After all, it’s about time the North East got a bigger slice of the medical pie.
