Meghalaya Gears Up to Scrap the Old Vehicles

Meghalaya introduces a vehicle scrappage policy to curb pollution and improve air quality by phasing out over 13,000 old vehicles, including iconic wooden buses and coal trucks, in a bid to protect the environment.
The Government of Meghalaya has announced a vehicle scrappage policy thatâs as much about clearing the clutter as it is about caring for the environment. And letâs be honestâwhen youâve got coal trucks huffing and puffing their way across hillocks and ancient wooden buses coughing down country lanes, itâs high time someone said, âRight, thatâs enough.â
Under the new policy, no fewer than 13,000 ageing vehicles are being shown the doorâ5,000 of them belonging to the government itself (about time, too), and another 8,000 privately owned. Government vehicles that have clocked more than 15 years will be the first to head to the scrapyard, while private vehicles have been given a bit of a breatherâonly those 35 years or older will need to hang up their keys.
But itâs not all straight out of the blue. The policy will be rolled out in phases, with the government mindful of the economic pinch such a move might cause. Thatâs why privately owned vehicles have been given more leewayânobody wants to throw the baby out with the bathwater, after all.
That said, itâs still a bittersweet moment. Some of those old wooden-bodied buses that have faithfully carted villagers up and down misty slopes will soon be off the road for good. And the coal trucksâsymbols of a bygone industrial hustleâmay be headed for the same fate. But perhaps that’s the price one pays to usher in a cleaner, greener Meghalaya.
At the end of the day, itâs not just about scrapping a few old bangers. Itâs about embracing a cleaner tomorrow. And in a region as breathtakingly beautiful as Meghalaya, one would say itâs about time.
