Largest EV Charging Hub in India

In a major leap towards green mobility, Thakurpukur in South Kolkata is set to host India’s largest EV charging hub with 300 chargers, powered by EzUrja.

In what could only be described as a jolly good shock to the system (pun absolutely intended), Thakurpukur in south Kolkata is set to plug into the future with India’s largest single-site electric vehicle (EV) charging hub. That’s right—once home to a dusty old plant, the nearly two-acre site owned by PSU Andrew Yule & Co is being given a sparkling new lease of life, courtesy of EzUrja, a company clearly not short of volts or vision.

Ashhok Kapoor, the Managing Director of EzUrja, has claimed that the upcoming facility will not only be the biggest in the country but will also rank as the second-largest in the world, boasting a jaw-dropping 300 chargers. For context, the current world leader—somewhere deep within China’s vast electric empire—has 650 chargers. So, fair play, we’re not quite leading the global race yet, but we’ve certainly got our foot on the accelerator.

“This is our first EV charging hub project,” said Kapoor, sounding as chipper as a chap who’s just found an empty seat on a crowded Tube. “It’s being built to service 300 vehicles of Snap-E, the all-electric app-based cab service.” Move over petrol pumps—looks like the future of transport just pulled into a new station.

The Gurgaon hub currently holds the national crown with 160 charging points, but it’s about to be well and truly outclassed. With a budget of ₹7.5 crore and an ambitious target to be up and running before Durga Puja, this isn’t just a puffed-up promise. Kapoor says it’s all systems go, and who are we to argue?

To give it a green twist, the hub will come fitted with solar panels and battery storage—because in 2025, it’s not enough to go electric; one must also go eco-chic. The full load capacity? A rather stately 6 megawatts, with fast chargers making up 20% of the lot, and local manufacturing powering the whole operation from their Himachal Pradesh unit. One might say it’s a case of Make in India—charge in Kolkata.

Kapoor also hinted at bigger things. “We’re planning 10 EV charging stations along the 250-km Kolkata-Asansol highway for electric buses,” he said. The state power department, not wanting to miss the party, is apparently offering land at substations along the route. One suspects there’ll be plenty of ribbon-cuttings and photo ops on the horizon.

Snap-E CEO Mayank Bindal chimed in, calling the initiative a “precedent for robust e-mobility infrastructure.” Translation: we’re going places—and doing so without smoking up the skies.

Not to be outdone by its own headlines, EzUrja is already sniffing around for another site in Kolkata for yet another hub. Because when it comes to EVs, you can never have too many plugs.

So there you have it. From abandoned industrial relic to state-of-the-art EV hub, Thakurpukur is charging headlong into the future. And if nothing else, we now know that Kolkata’s traffic may still crawl—but at least it’ll do so silently.

Shockingly good news, wouldn’t you say?
