Lakshmi and Her Eight Forms
A devoted foodie with keen interest in wild life, music,…
Discover the eight divine forms of Goddess Lakshmi according to Vishnu Purana. Learn how each form—Adi Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, and Vidya Lakshmi—brings unique blessings of wealth, knowledge, and courage, both material and spiritual.
In the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, emerges during the great cosmic churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) as per the Vishnu Purana. She blesses devotees not only with material wealth but also with spiritual prosperity. The goddess, in her eight distinct forms, governs various kinds of riches—both earthly and otherworldly. Let’s take a cheeky little stroll through her avatars, shall we?
1. Adi Lakshmi or Maha Lakshmi
Imagine the universe at its very inception. It’s a bit like trying to bake a cake without a recipe, and up pops Adi Lakshmi, with her four hands to sort everything out. One hand carries a lotus (because, of course, nothing says divine power like a flower), another holds a white flag (always best to keep the peace), while the remaining two flash the ‘fear not’ and ‘boon-bestowing’ gestures. Astrology tells us she’s in cahoots with Jupiter, the planetary giant known for wisdom and expansion. Let’s just say, if you want cosmic goodwill, Adi Lakshmi’s your lady.
2. Dhana Lakshmi
Decked in red, Dhana Lakshmi isn’t just about a few quid in the bank. No, she’s here with six hands full of goodies: a discus, a ceremonial pot with mango leaves and a coconut (sounds like the makings of a cracking fruit salad), a bow and arrow, a lotus, gold coins, and that ever-reassuring ‘fear not’ sign. Associated with Venus, the planet of luxury, this form ensures you’re never short of a shiny penny or two, provided you’ve done your karmic homework, of course.
3. Dhanya Lakshmi
Green is the colour of nature, and Dhanya Lakshmi is the mother of abundance. Clad in a green sari, she’s got eight hands, two of which are busy holding lotuses (naturally). The others? Well, they’re juggling a mace, grains, sugarcane, bananas, and—you guessed it—those indispensable ‘fear not’ and ‘boon’ mudras. If your pantry’s looking a bit bare, this goddess, linked with both the Sun and the Moon, ensures your cupboards never go empty.
4. Gaja Lakshmi
Now, here’s a goddess with a flair for the dramatic. Seated on a lotus, Gaja Lakshmi’s flanked by two elephants pouring water over her head from their pots—a bit of a royal spa treatment, really. Dressed in red and associated with the Sun, this form of embodies both fortune and majesty. She’s the one you call upon if you need a bit of extra luck with the larger things in life. Just think of her as your personal good fortune fairy.
5. Santana Lakshmi
If you’ve ever wondered who’s watching over the kiddies, look no further than Santana Lakshmi. With six hands, this version of the goddess holds a pot, a shield, a sword, a lotus, and—wait for it—she also cuddles a small child. Now that’s multitasking! Linked to Jupiter and Venus, she’s the patron of progeny and parental joy, ensuring that family life is filled with blessings.
6. Veera Lakshmi
Also known as Dhairya Lakshmi, this form of the goddess is the embodiment of courage. Dressed in red and holding a discus, conch, bow, arrow, trident, and a palm leaf scripture, she’s all about keeping your nerve during life’s battles. And if you’re ever in a bit of a bind, you’ll want her Mars-infused energy by your side. After all, who wouldn’t want a fearless deity in their corner?
7. Vijaya Lakshmi
Victory! Yes, Vijaya Lakshmi is your go-to goddess when you’re striving to win, whether in life, love, or battle. Draped in red, she carries a discus, conch, sword, shield, lotus, noose, and of course, her ever-comforting ‘fear not’ gesture. Governed by the Sun and Mars, she’s the celestial cheerleader that helps you push through and emerge triumphant.
8. Vidya Lakshmi
For those of us who’ve ever crammed for an exam or tried to master the complexities of life, Vidya Lakshmi is the one you need. Adorned in white, she sits serenely on a swan and is all about knowledge and wisdom. Although she might share similarities with Saraswati, Lakshmi’s focus is more on using education to acquire wealth—because who said learning doesn’t pay?
Allow me to give you a bit more on the subject, since we Bengalis always have a little something tucked away for a rainy day, don’t we? Well, here’s a nugget for you. In Bengal, Lakshmi is worshipped as Kojagori Lakhi. I’ve already shared a rather insightful article on that. If you fancy a read, just click HERE!
So there you have it—a delightful dive into the eight forms of the goddess . Each one brings a unique flavour of prosperity, be it material wealth, knowledge, or good old-fashioned courage. If you’re ever feeling a bit skint or in need of divine support, you know whom to call. Just remember to keep that karma in check—She is always watching!
