In a grand celebration of art, culture, and spirituality, the Youth Association of Mohammad Ali Park Durga Puja has embarked on an ambitious endeavor. They have undertaken the remarkable challenge of recreating the renowned “Kedarnath Temple” as their theme for this year’s Durga Puja celebrations, marking their 55th year of festivities. The theme was inaugurated virtually by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee, with the virtual presence of esteemed dignitaries including Sri. Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Member of Parliament; Sri. Vivek Gupta, MLA; Smt. Rehana Khatun, Councillor & Borough Chairman; Smt. Ayesha Kaniz, Councillor; Sri. Rajesh Sinha, Councillor; Sri. Manoj Poddar, Chairman of Youth Association of Mohammad Ali Park, and other eminent personalities.
The Mohammad Ali Park Durga Puja is one of the most popular and historic Durga Puja venues in Central Kolkata. Over the years, it has earned a reputation for its awe-inspiring celebrations and intricate themes, making it a must-visit location during the festive season.
The theme for this year’s Durga Puja – the iconic Kedarnath Temple – is a significant departure from the usual themes seen at puja pandals. This choice is not just an artistic expression but also a spiritual journey that connects the people of Kolkata with one of India’s holiest pilgrimage destinations.
Kedarnath Temple, situated in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, holds immense religious significance. It is perched at an altitude of 3584 meters above sea level, nestled on the banks of the Mandakini River. This temple is not only one of the Char Dhams, the four sacred pilgrimage sites, but it is also part of the Panch Kedar and is revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva in India.
Mr. Surendra Kr. Sharma, the General Secretary of the Youth Association of Mohammad Ali Park Durga Puja, shared the inspiration behind this unique theme. He stated, “We came up with the idea of constructing a replica of Kedarnath temple because many of us have not visited Kedarnath. Through this pandal, they can have a glimpse of the holy shrine and feel as if they are doing Darshan of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The outer look of the pandal replicates the Kedarnath temple faithfully. This year’s theme, ‘Shiva is Shakti,’ is depicted in the form of the Mother Goddess idol, which is being crafted by the renowned artist Kush Bera of Midnapur. The lighting for the pandal is inspired by Chandannagar.”
This unique concept demonstrates the puja committee’s commitment to creating an awe-inspiring and spiritually enlightening experience for visitors. It allows individuals who may not have the opportunity to visit the actual Kedarnath Temple to connect with its sacred aura right in the heart of Kolkata.
The Mohammad Ali Park Durga Puja has a long-standing tradition of blending innovation, tradition, and artistic excellence, and their choice of the Kedarnath Temple theme is another testament to their dedication to making each year’s celebration more memorable than the last.
