Highest Bungee Jump

Sikkim launches India’s highest bungee jump at Singshore Bridge, Uttarey. Standing at a breathtaking 120 metres, this record-breaking adventure promises thrill-seekers an unforgettable leap, all while promoting rural tourism and cultural heritage.

If you thought Sikkim was all about serene monasteries, lush green hills, and endless cups of butter tea, think again! The state has just raised the bar—quite literally—by unveiling India’s highest bungee jump, standing at a hair-raising 120 metres. And where, you ask? None other than the magnificent Singshore Bridge in Uttarey, West Sikkim.

What makes this bungee jump a proper corker is that it’s the first in India to be built on a bridge rather than dangling thrill-seekers from a crane like an overenthusiastic window cleaner. That’s right—this one’s got a bit more class. The previous record-holder in Uttarkashi stood at a mere 117 metres, which, let’s be honest, now looks like a warm-up stretch in comparison.

A Leap of Faith Years in the Making

The idea of turning Singshore Bridge into an adrenaline junkie’s paradise has been bouncing around for yonks. The locals and the State Tourism Department have long thought the bridge had more potential than just being something picturesque to drive across. After all, why settle for a scenic view when you can strap yourself to a bit of elastic and hurl yourself off it?

And so, after months (if not years) of planning, paperwork, and what we can only assume was an inordinate amount of tea-drinking in government offices, the grand opening finally arrived. The launch event saw the presence of Kaji Sherpa, Joint Director (Adventure) of the Tourism Department, alongside adventure tourism experts from Nepal, who clearly know a thing or two about extreme sports.

Sherpa, ever the advocate for adventure, proudly declared, “We have been working to promote adventure sports in this region for a long time. After thorough research, we identified bungee jumping as a viable attraction. Today, we successfully conducted two jump trials, and I am proud to say that this is now India’s highest bungee jump.” In other words, they’ve done their homework, and they’re not messing about.

The Experts Weigh In

An adventure tourism expert from Nepal—who presumably has seen his fair share of people flinging themselves off things for fun—commended the Sikkim Tourism Department for making it all happen. He pointed out that while the demand for bungee jumps is soaring worldwide, bureaucratic red tape often slows things to a snail’s pace. “We have received proposals from other countries, but getting approvals is always a hurdle. However, in Sikkim, the government’s proactive approach ensured that everything progressed efficiently. The credit goes to the hard work and vision of the Sikkim Tourism Department,” he added.

No Cutting Corners on Safety

Let’s face it—bungee jumping isn’t exactly the sort of activity where you’d want someone to ‘wing it’. Fortunately, safety remains the top priority for the Singshore Bridge facility. “We adhere to the highest international safety standards,” assured the expert. “The ropes are specially imported, and we strictly follow guidelines on their usage. Each piece of equipment has a fixed lifespan and is replaced when necessary. Even if a rope has never been used, if it reaches its expiration date, we discard it. There is no compromise on safety.” Well, that’s certainly good to know—nothing ruins a thrill quite like questionable elastic.

More Than Just a Jump

The bungee trials were conducted as part of the Sikkim Rural Tourism Meet (SRTM) 2025, an event aimed at putting rural Sikkim on the map. Beyond death-defying leaps, visitors can look forward to a deep dive into the region’s cultural heritage, traditional art forms, and day-to-day rural life.

“This event will allow visitors to experience rural Sikkim in a way they never have before,” said Kaji Sherpa. “Tourists will get to interact with local communities, witness traditional art forms, and participate in cultural activities. The objective is to boost rural economies while preserving our heritage.”

So, there you have it—Sikkim is not only pushing the boundaries of adventure tourism but also giving its rural communities a well-deserved spotlight. Whether you’re up for taking the plunge or prefer to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, one thing’s for sure: Sikkim’s tourism game has just levelled up.

Fancy a go? Just don’t forget to pack an extra pair of trousers—you might need them!
