Portugal’s journey in Euro 2024 ended in a dramatic quarterfinal against 2022 FIFA World Cup runners-up France. After a goalless draw in regular and extra time, France clinched victory 5-3 in a tense penalty shootout.

Portugal lost against the 2022 FIFA World Cup runners-up France in the quarterfinal of Euro 2024. After a goalless draw in the stipulated time and the extra time, France won 5-3 in the tie-breaker. France would now take on Spain in the semi-finals.

Probably this was the last Euro Cup for the two aged Portugal legends– Ronald and Pepe.

The match was well fought-out one where both the teams attacked several times but could not change the scoreboard during the 90 minutes and the extra time of 30 minutes.

France, led by Mbappe, created many opportunities but they could not change the scoreline. Though Ronald looked off-coloured, Portugal was ruthless and did not concede a single inch against the rampaging France in the 120 minutes of play.

Portuguese goal-keeper Diago Costa made some incredible saves to take the match to the tie-breakers.

First Half

Portugal’s Nuno Mendes attempted the first shot for his team but it went out of the post in the opening minutes of the match. France was continually creating pressure against Portugal.

Portugal mid-fielder Bruno got a free kick at the fag-end of the first half but it was superbly saved by the French goalkeeper.

Both the teams got opportunities to score in the first half but none could score.

Second half

In the second half, Mbaape counter-attacked and fired a powerful shot towards the goal post but it was well saved by the goalkeeper Diago Costa.

During the second half Mbaape, who was wearing a face mask to protect his already fractured nose, again got injured on his nose.

Meanwhile, both the captains- Mbaape and Ronaldo– didn’t play very well in the second half but they made some good assists.

The whole credit for a goalless draw went to the goalkeepers of both the teams. They were simply amazing throughout the match. They saved all the shots from the opposition teams. Mbappe came up with many attempts but all of them were saved.

Extra time

After 90 minutes, another half an hour went without a goal. As usual both the teams could not score in the extra time and it led to a tiebreaker.

Tiebreaker

Here is how both the teams performed in the tie-breaker.

France – Dembele scored the first penalty to get the lead.

Portugal —Ronaldo scored a brilliant penalty to equalize.
