Discover the remarkable achievements of Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, an esteemed conservation scientist from Assam, who recently received ‘The Harry Messel Award’ for Conservation Leadership by the IUCN.
In a splendid showcase of talent hailing from Assam, Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar has recently been bestowed with ‘The Harry Messel Award’ for Conservation Leadership by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The honour was presented during the 5th IUCN SSC Leaders’ Meeting in Abu Dhabi, where a veritable smorgasbord of around 3,000 conservation experts are currently grappling with the intertwined crises of biodiversity and climate change. One might say, it’s like herding cats—but with far more dire consequences.
Dr. Talukdar’s recognition comes as no surprise to those familiar with his impressive track record in species conservation. His illustrious career with the IUCN began back in 1991, and he has made significant strides ever since, notably stepping into the role of Chair of the Asian Rhino Specialist Group in 2008. It’s no small feat to be at the helm of such a crucial initiative, especially considering the plight of these magnificent creatures.
Bridging the Gap for Asian Rhinos
Not one to shy away from a challenge, Dr. Talukdar has been instrumental in orchestrating meetings for the three Asian Rhino States. The inaugural gathering took place in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry there—certainly a fine excuse for a bit of travel! The second meeting saw the spotlight shift to New Delhi, in partnership with India’s Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. Finally, the third meeting convened in Chitwan National Park, Nepal, alongside the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation. This whirlwind of activity aimed to bolster conservation efforts across the Asian rhino range states—an admirable pursuit that speaks volumes of his commitment to these gentle giants.
Leading the Charge with Aaranyak
On top of his international efforts, Dr. Talukdar is the founder Secretary General and CEO of Aaranyak, North East India’s premier research-driven biodiversity conservation organisation based in Guwahati. Talk about wearing many hats! His expertise has also attracted invitations from Indonesian conservation agencies, seeking his guidance in managing the critically endangered Javan and Sumatran Rhinos. If only there were a frequent flyer programme for conservationists, he’d certainly rack up the points!
From 2007 to 2010, Dr. Talukdar served on the Standing Committee of the National Board of Wildlife, and later became a member of the Project Elephant Steering Committee. His involvement in the formulation of the National Wildlife Action Plan for 2017-2031 further underscores his pivotal role in shaping wildlife conservation policies in India.
A Legacy of Achievements
Under his stewardship, the Indian Rhino Vision (IRV) 2020 programme successfully translocated 22 wild rhinos from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Kaziranga National Park to Manas National Park between 2008 and 2022. That’s no small potatoes in the world of wildlife conservation! With over 70 scientific papers and more than 60 coordinated projects to his name over the past 25 years, Dr. Talukdar is indeed a force to be reckoned with. His contributions to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in the Eastern Himalaya from 2002 to 2004 further solidify his status as a leading authority in the field.
Raising a Toast to a True Conservation Champion
In celebrating Dr. Talukdar’s achievements, it’s clear that he embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication to conservation. His accolades and global recognition highlight not only his personal commitment but also shine a light on the crucial work being done in Assam and beyond. As he continues to lead the charge in conservation efforts, one can only hope that his efforts inspire others to join the cause. After all, it’s not just about saving the rhinos—it’s about preserving the very fabric of our planet for generations to come. Bravo, Dr. Talukdar! You’re not just a hero; you’re a legend in the making!
