The Disguised
Supratim, student of Class V of an English medium school…
Reaching the school early, our young writer Supratim Saha encounters a bizarre experience when he proceeds to open his locker. After opening it, he is pleasantly surprised to find …..
Once I reached the school quite early. I thought everybody had already arrived, but actually, they had not. I felt a little morose.
I began blaming my mother for getting me up early and packing me into the school bus without verifying the time. I was still sleepy, not knowing what to do.
I somehow managed to drag myself to the hall on the first floor where individual lockers of the students were there. I thought of dumping my bag in the locker, and would wait for my friends to arrive.
I could play a little bit, my drowsiness would go, I felt.
Even after waiting for more than fifteen minutes, none had arrived.
I was feeling extremely bored; I wanted to check my locker to see if there was anything so that I could play with to remove my boredom.
So, I went and checked the locker. To my surprise, I found inside a very small chair with a bushy tail & a wall clock with a big grey nose.
I rubbed my eyes repeatedly, wondering whether I was sleepy-eyed and was unable to have any clear vision.
For a clearer look inside, I quickly dragged a desk & began peeping at the locker in wonder. Holy Christ, my locker was alive!!!
Or at least, some articles inside were alive! How could it be? I looked around and pinched myself hard to ascertain if I was still in the grip of that sickening drowsiness.
No, I was perfectly in shape.
The strange articles inside the locker said to me, “Don’t be scared, we’ll not harm you.” As their appearances were funny, I quickly became friends with them.
Soon, they indicated that it was time for them to leave. But their movements appeared a little weird. I noticed it, yet I kept quiet.
When they were finally leaving my locker, sprouted forth some words that did not form a sentence. They simply opened up a portal and went through it.
There was only one thing which struck me and that was what exactly the inmates in the locker were trying to convey.
At night, I kept on thinking about it. I faintly remembered the words and struggled to form a sentence which read like “ Help me, they won’t let me go” —
At that moment, I noticed a worm flying quite monotonously advancing toward me. Suddenly, it entered into my nose, but I sneezed it out.
Then again, it flung itself towards me; but this time, it landed on my wrist & dissolved itself. I could feel it was entering my body through the skin!
I swiftly wrapped my headphone wire around my arm and tried my best to stop it going any further. I kept my arm wrapped for the rest of the night.
Next morning, I unwrapped the wire and left for the school. While I was crossing the road, I saw a little girl playing with a cricket ball. But suddenly, she came in front of a car.
I immediately jumped and stopped the car just with one hand. As I pressed hard, my hand turned purple & a tiny eyeball appeared for a split second and was gone in a jiffy.
I stood puzzled for a moment and then began walking, wondering who or what gave me that Herculean strength to stop the car with one hand. Till this day, I am searching an answer.
