Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh will launch the first state-of-the-art robotic surgery unit in a government-run hospital in Northeast India by November 2024.

Come November 2024, the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh is set to make history by becoming the first government-run hospital in the entire Northeast to boast a cutting-edge robotic surgery unit. This pioneering move is poised to revolutionise the medical landscape, bringing complex surgeries within easier reach for patients in the region. No longer will individuals need to embark on costly trips abroad in search of advanced medical care – instead, they will find world-class treatment right on their doorstep.

The announcement was made by Dr Sanjeeb Kakati, Principal of AMCH, during his address as the chief guest at the World Anaesthesia Day celebration on 16th October at the John Berry White Hall. Dr Kakati described the forthcoming unit as the dawn of a “new era” for medical care in Assam and the broader Northeast, highlighting the significance of this step in bridging the gap between rural healthcare facilities and modern technology.

Dr Kakati also took the opportunity to praise the vast strides made within the Department of Anaesthesia, extending heartfelt congratulations to the dedicated doctors and students who are working tirelessly to ensure the best possible care for patients.

The event, jointly organised by the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA), Dibrugarh City Branch, and the Department of Anaesthesia of AMCH, served as a fitting backdrop for such a momentous announcement. Professor Dr Karuna Kumar Das, the Head of the Department of Anaesthesia, set the stage with a warm welcome, providing insight into the importance of the day and the pivotal role the department plays in saving lives.

Dr Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, the newly-appointed Superintendent of AMCH, echoed similar sentiments, shedding light on the often-underappreciated contributions of anaesthetists to medical science. He noted that while the vital role of anaesthesia specialists frequently goes unnoticed by the general public, their work is nothing short of life-saving.

As the countdown to November begins, the launch of this state-of-the-art robotic surgery unit marks a significant leap forward for AMCH. It underscores the hospital’s commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements, ensuring that patients from all walks of life have access to the highest standards of care.
