To mark the centenary of Akashvani Kolkata, the timeless classic Ogo Amar Agomani Alo by Soma Das brings a soulful tribute to Mahalaya, honoring the rich musical legacy that has defined Durga Puja celebrations across generations.

For Bengali singer Soma Das, Mahalaya has always begun with an unforgettable sound: the sacred chants and melodies of Mahishasurmardini echoing through the radio. Those cherished childhood mornings, filled with anticipation for Durga Puja, remain deeply rooted in her heart.

To mark the centenary of Akashvani Kolkata—the iconic broadcasting institution that shaped these cultural traditions—London-based vocalist Soma Das is set to release her rendition of “Ogo Amar Agomani Alo” ahead of Durga Puja.

A Timeless Classic Revisited

Originally penned by Bani Kumar, composed by the legendary Pankaj Mullick, and rendered by Sipra Basu, “Ogo Amar Agomani Alo” remains a deeply loved piece from Akashvani Kolkata’s classic Mahishasurmardini repertoire.

Soma’s upcoming release pays homage to the visionary artists and broadcasters whose craft has carried the spiritual essence of Mahalaya across generations.

“Growing up, Mahalaya morning was never just another morning. Listening to Mahishasurmardini was how I felt Puja drawing near,” shares Soma. “I chose this song to honour those memories and to offer my respects to Akashvani Kolkata’s musical legacy.”

Celebrating Roots and Musical Diversity

Although residing in London, Soma remains deeply connected to her heritage. An alumnus of the esteemed music institute Dakshini, where she earned her diploma in Tagore songs, she is an artist driven by a passion for exploring diverse musical traditions.

Soma has consistently celebrated grassroots music and collaborated with root musicians—from performing with Bauls in Santiniketan and dancing alongside Santhali tribal artists to featuring Kolkata’s popular Mahboob Band at the launch of her debut Rabindra Sangeet album, Amar Praner Manush, produced with renowned composer Debojyoti Mishra.
