Arnob Hits the Road: Bangla Folk Rock Goes To US

Shayan Chowdhury Arnob kicks off his U.S. concert tour with “Bangla Folk Rock Fest”, performing in eight cities alongside Arnob and Friends. From Dallas to Los Angeles, the beloved Coke Studio Bangla artist brings Bangla folk fusion to the American stage.

Shayan Chowdhury Arnob – the soft-spoken maestro of melancholy, melody, and marvellous musical mischief – has packed up his harmonium, rounded up his merry band of troubadours (Arnob and Friends, if you please), and is gallivanting across the good ol’ United States of America on what’s been billed as the “Bangla Folk Rock Fest”.

The whole thing kicked off on Saturday, 19th April in Dallas – where the cowboy boots met the Baul beats in what we can only assume was a delightful cultural conundrum. If that doesn’t scream fusion, I don’t know what does.

The tour, managed by the presumably very busy bees at Freedom Entertainment Ltd, isn’t just a one-hit wonder. Oh no. Arnob and Friends are taking their tunes to eight cities in total – the next stop being Minneapolis on 3rd May (one hopes it’ll be slightly less chilly by then), before wending their way through Seattle, Austin, Washington DC, New York, Columbia, and finally bowing out with a bang in Los Angeles on 25th May. One imagines the Hollywood crowd won’t know what’s hit them.

Now, if you’ve been wondering what Arnob’s been up to lately – aside from sipping tea and gazing meaningfully into the distance – he’s been deeply ensconced in the world of Coke Studio Bangla. Yes, our man has taken a bit of a sabbatical from solo serenading to helm this wildly successful venture, which has now seen two seasons come and go like particularly melodious monsoons. Acclaimed, adored, and not a single autotune scandal in sight.

However – and here comes the slightly soggy bit of news – while Season 3 of Coke Studio Bangla has been all but wrapped up, the release of its songs has been put on ice due to “the prevailing situation” (insert dramatic music here). Officials are tight-lipped, which usually means something is brewing behind the scenes, or everyone’s just terribly British about it and avoiding confrontation.

Still, fans needn’t twiddle their thumbs too long. Arnob’s on tour, spirits are high, and the dulcet tones of Bangla folk rock are echoing through American concert halls. It’s rather like the Beatles invading America all over again – just with a bit more dotara and a lot less mop-top.
