3 Idiots School Finally Gets CBSC Affiliation

Druk Padma Karpo School, famously known as “Rancho’s School” from 3 Idiots, has finally received CBSE affiliation after over two decades.

Talk about a long time coming! Nestled snugly in the cold desert of Ladakh, the Druk Padma Karpo School — fondly known as “Rancho’s school” thanks to its starring role in the Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots — has at last secured CBSE affiliation, a good two decades and change after first flinging open its doors.

It’s been a bit of a dog’s dinner getting here, with more delays and rejections than a Indian Rail timetable in winter. But finally, the powers-that-be have seen sense.

Until now, the school had been toddling along under the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE). Now, with CBSE affiliation firmly in its back pocket, the school is set to expand its offerings up to Class XII — much to the delight of pupils and parents alike.

“We’ve finally bagged CBSE affiliation after years of being given the runaround,” said Principal Mingur Angmo, who must surely have the patience of a saint. “Our first batch of Class X students is now eagerly awaiting their CBSE board exam results. Despite having top-notch infrastructure, cracking results, and a teaching method that is quite innovative, we couldn’t get the NOC from JKBOSE for love nor money.”

Under CBSE rules, a no-objection certificate from the state board is essential — a bit like needing a permission slip from a headmaster just to go to the loo. The school had been trying to get that elusive piece of paper since before Ladakh was even made a Union Territory.

“The infrastructure is already expanding,” Angmo quipped. “We plan to launch Classes XI and XII by 2028. Our teachers are undergoing training to ensure the students’ transition to the CBSE curriculum is as smooth.”

Given that the school’s teaching methods were already miles away from traditional chalk-and-talk, and that CBSE itself is now warming to more progressive styles post-NEP, the timing couldn’t have been better if they’d planned it.

Still, despite Ladakh’s new administrative status, many schools in the region remain yoked to the Jammu and Kashmir board. There was even talk of setting up a new territorial board to better fit Ladakh’s unique needs — a plan that seems to have been kicked into the long grass.

Founded 24 years ago and named after the revered scholar Mipham Pema Karpo (with “Padma Karpo” charmingly meaning “white lotus” in the local Bothi language), the school has seen more camera flashes than the Amir Khan on an award ceremony.

Ever since 3 Idiots put it on the map, the place has been flooded with tourists, who treat the school like a pilgrimage site. A particular wall, immortalised in the film’s closing scene when the hapless Chatur gets a rather shocking lesson in physics courtesy of two mischievous lads, became the star attraction.

Alas, the “iconic idiotic wall” — damaged during the devastating flash floods of 2010 — had to be partially replaced with traditional wooden structures more suited to Ladakh’s harsh climate. By 2018, the school took the very sensible decision to relocate Rancho’s Wall, lest students spend more time dodging selfie sticks than studying.

“These days, the tourist area and the school area are separate and peaceful,” Angmo explained. “Mind you, every now and then visitors do stumble upon our activities. Only yesterday, during a mock election exercise with the local election commission, tourists ended up getting a crash course in democracy!”

With CBSE affiliation finally sorted, the school is now poised to give its students an even bigger leg-up, both in India and abroad. “We can now truly blend the best of both worlds — traditional classroom rigour with innovative, playful teaching methods.” Angmo added, a smile playing on her lips.

And about time too — after all, good things come to those who wait… even if sometimes, they have to wait longer than an Calcutta winter.
