Sivasagar Tops HSLC

Sivasagar shines in the HSLC 2025 results with the highest pass percentage in Assam, while Sribhumi faces a dramatic drop. A detailed look at district-wise performances, student numbers, and official reactions

Well, it’s that time of the year again, when nervous students, relieved parents, and knackered teachers gather around their screens and prayer rooms, hoping for a miracle—or at the very least, a pass mark. The HSLC examination results for 2025 were declared this Friday in Assam, and while Sivasagar was all grins and glory, other districts—Sribhumi, we’re looking at you—were left clutching their metaphorical report cards and wondering where it all went pear-shaped.

Sivasagar, clearly top of the class and the teacher’s pet this year, clocked in a stellar pass percentage of 85.55%, leaving the rest of Assam to pick up their jaws off the floor. Dibrugarh, not one to rest on its laurels, trotted in at second place with 81.10%, and Dhemaji took the bronze medal with 80.64%.

In a chat with the press, Debajit Gogoi, senior official from the Education Department in Sivasagar, sounded like a man who’d just won the lottery—twice. “A total of 8,371 candidates appeared from our district,” he said. “With 2,918 bagging first division, 3,093 scooping second, and a whopping 7,790 landing in the third division.” (Yes, we also did the maths—some results still feel like they defy physics, but we’ll let it slide). Gogoi heaped praises on students, teachers, parents, and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan team, practically offering a group hug across the airwaves.

Meanwhile in Dibrugarh, Inspector of Schools Samiron Borah was spotted doing a small jig of joy. “Back in 2022, we were in 16th place with a modest 53.79%, and look at us now!” he beamed. “Thanks to Mission Utsah and a bucketload of hard work, we’ve finally made it to second position.” One can imagine Dibrugarh’s school corridors echoing with cheers, and perhaps the odd celebratory jalebi.

Now, not to be the bearer of bad news—but someone has to draw the short straw—Sribhumi had a bit of a shocker. The district, which managed a decent 68.4% last year, came tumbling down the ladder with just 47.96% this time round. If that’s not a nosedive, we don’t know what is. Out of 17,013 students, only 8,160 scraped through. Maybe it’s time for a few strong cups of chai and a thorough post-mortem.

Goalpara and Morigaon didn’t fare much better, scoring 51.31% and 51.40% respectively—just about enough to keep them from being bottom of the barrel, but not enough to warrant high-fives.

Cachar, once a steady performer, seems to have developed a case of academic vertigo. From 63.99% in 2023 to 51.58% in 2025, it’s been a steady downward spiral. Out of 25,631 candidates, only 4,506 made the first division cut. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the Wi-Fi—either way, something’s gone awry.

Hailakandi, however, offered a bit of a silver lining, clocking in a pass percentage of 58.38%, with 5,730 of its 9,815 candidates passing. Not exactly a standing ovation moment, but hey, it’s not curtains either.

Meanwhile, Education Department officials in Guwahati puffed up their chests and declared that results had been churned out in record time—just 37 days—thanks to the wonders of modern technology. One might say they’ve given the good old ink-and-paper system the elbow and embraced the digital age like a teenager on TikTok.

Rechecking and compartmental exams are also in the offing, so for those who missed the mark, there’s still a chance to give it another go. Chin up, pencils sharpened.

So there you have it—the triumphs, the tumbles, and everything in between. Congratulations to the lot who sailed through, commiserations to those who didn’t, and to the rest—well, there’s always next year. After all, life’s not just about marks, is it? It’s about grit, grace, and knowing where to find the best cup of tea when results day gets a bit too much.
