In the heart of Manipur, where ethnic tensions simmer between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, a beacon of hope shone brightly on Thursday with the celebration of the “Mera Hou Chongba” festival. This annual affair, held at the esteemed Sana Konung and the historic Kangla Uttra in Imphal, serves as a reminder that even in the midst of strife, the spirit of camaraderie can unite indigenous communities from the hills and valleys.

As the 15th Lunar day of the Mera Month rolled around, the state-level organising committee of “Mera Hou Chongba 2024” rolled out the red carpet for village chiefs, cultural troupes, and invitees from all walks of life. They gathered not merely to indulge in festivities, but to reinforce the bonds of oneness and brotherhood among the diverse ethnic groups that call Manipur home.

Awangbou Newmai, the Water Resources, Relief and Disaster Management Minister—and a Naga leader, no less—graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He didn’t mince words, pointing out that the festival exemplifies the meaningful connections between all ethnic groups in the state. “It’s a right royal do!” he quipped, highlighting the importance of culture in tightening those bonds. “Let’s not allow modernisation to dull our cultural spark,” he urged the youths, echoing the sentiments of a grandparent who’s just discovered Instagram.

Even the Titular King of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba, got in on the action, declaring this year’s observance one of the best in history. “For heaven’s sake, let’s all pull together!” he implored, urging the indigenous folk to unite for peace and prosperity. His gratitude extended to community leaders, organisers, and everyone who played a part in making the day a resounding success.

The celebrations kicked off with a rich tapestry of cultural exchanges, starting with the Men Tongba and Yenkhong Tamba rituals at Kangla Uttra, followed by the Thang Ta Salutation and Invocation by Maiba. The day wouldn’t have been complete without a souvenir release—a lovely memento to commemorate the event, reminding participants that the best things in life come in small packages. Gift exchanges and cultural performances from various groups painted a vibrant picture of unity in diversity, and if there was ever a reason to don your Sunday best, this was it!
