Ganore Likhunu Koli Gets a Glorious Makeover

A nostalgic yet refreshing tribute to the beloved Assamese song Ganore Likhunu Koli. Reimagined by Chandan Gautam and Mayuri Baruah, with stunning arrangement by Manin Barua and visuals by B.K. Jharnendu, this rendition bridges generations and brings retro magic back to life.

Here is how Ganore Likhunu Koli made my Sunday special.

There’s something rather peculiar about people born in the ’70s—they’ve all gone a bit misty-eyed over the music of their heyday. Mention the word retro, and they’ll go off like a broken record about LPs, cassettes, and how the radio was the bee’s knees. I mean, back in the mid-’80s, we didn’t have the luxury of YouTube or Spotify. If you wanted to hear your favourite song again, you either waited for the radio DJ to be in a good mood or hoped your cassette didn’t get chewed up halfway through the chorus.

I was just a young whippersnapper back then, not quite old enough to be allowed into the cinema without a full parental inquisition. There was this film, Puja, released in 1985, that made a bit of a splash. I wasn’t granted the privilege of watching it in the theatre—my parents probably thought I’d grow up too fast if I saw adults singing their hearts out in mustard fields—but I do distinctly remember a song from it. Ganore Likhunu Koli. Even the title sounded like something important was about to happen.

Fast forward to today—I’m doing what any self-respecting middle-aged person does when they’re supposed to be working—scrolling through YouTube like it owes me money. And lo and behold! Up pops that very song. But not quite how I remembered it.

This version is a shimmering new rendition sung beautifully by Chandan Gautam and Mayuri Baruah. Honestly, they’ve breathed new life into the tune without stepping on the toes of nostalgia. Manin Barua’s arrangement is absolutely top-drawer—tasteful, emotive, and polished to a shine. Tapan Das strums his guitar like a man possessed (in the best possible way), and the whole thing has been crafted with immense care at Studio Temptation, which, despite its nightclub-sounding name, clearly takes music seriously. Manin Barua also handled the mixing and mastering like a proper maestro, and B. K. Jharnendu’s video editing is slick without being flashy—a perfect visual complement to the audio.

All in all, it’s not just a remake—it’s a tribute. One that honours the soul of the original while gently coaxing it into the modern age. It left me grinning like a Cheshire cat and hitting replay more times than I care to admit. Hats off to the entire team—Ganore Likhunu Koli has truly been reborn, and what a cracking job they’ve done!

Sharing the song with you my readers.
