The Night Wears Saffron

Beneath a celestial hush, ‘The Night Wears Saffron‘ a Poem by Aarshia Sen, captures the radiant, sanctified spirit of India, where fragrant incense and golden moonlight weave an eternal song of devotion.

The Night Wears Saffron

It is said the sun never truly departs from this sacred land—
it merely lays down its crown
and surrenders the heavens to gentler grace.

As I wander through these dusky roads of Hind,
the night descends not in shadow,
but in song.

From temple spires, the conch resounds;
and the air, fragrant with incense and jasmine,
weaves its prayers into the fabric of the wind—
tender, eternal, and divine.

The moon ascends, vast and burnished,
a goddess unveiled.
Her light spills upon the terracotta roofs,
turning mere dust into quiet gold.

I have crossed the snows of Persia,
and the endless deserts of Arabia,
yet never have I witnessed a darkness
so radiant, so sanctified.

A single flame trembles in a window—
a fragile soul of devotion,
perhaps for love, perhaps for God;
and here, I think,
the two are indistinguishable.

And I, a wanderer humbled by wonder,
stand beneath this celestial hush—
while the earth breathes softly beneath my feet,
and the stars, ancient and knowing,
watch in silence.

If ever Heaven were to touch the Earth,
it would be thus:
beneath the saffron night of India.
