“Jabo Ki Jabo Na,” With a New Twist
Just ahead of the biggest Bengali festival, Durga Puja, renowned music director Debojyoti Mishra and UK-based singer Madhuchhanda Gangopadhyay have collaborated on a special project. They pay homage to one of the most beloved classic RD Burman and Asha Bhosle Puja songs: “Jabo Ki Jabo Na.”
Debojyoti Mishra and Madhuchhnda Gangopadhyay have re-envisioned “Jabo Ki Jabo Na, Bhebe, Bhebe Hayare Jawa To Holo Na,” the iconic 1968 song that marked the first Bengali release by the RD-Asha duo. This original track, known for its captivating Bossa Nova and Brazilian rhythm, was a staple on 78 RPM records and a timeless favorite in Puja pandals.
A New Arrangement with Nostalgic Interludes
Debojyoti Mishra has given the song a fresh musical arrangement that is already proving to be highly enjoyable. To enhance the nostalgia, the new version features melodies from several other popular RD Burman songs woven into the interludes. The addictive music video, directed by Pallab Gayan, captures the spirit of the old Puja days when music played on the mic defined the festival atmosphere.
Bringing Back the ‘Sharad Arghya’ Tradition
Adding a unique touch of heritage, the duo has published a special song booklet, reminiscent of the ‘Sharad Arghya’ publications by major music labels during the Pujas. This collectible booklet includes:
- A picture of the original 1968 78 RPM record.
- Rare photographs of the legendary RD-Asha duo.
- The original lyrics by Gouri Prasanna Majumdar.
- Personal notes from both Debojyoti Mishra and Madhuchhanda Gangopadhyay.

Original Lyrics by Gouri Prasanna MajumdarFor singer Madhuchhanda Gangopadhyay, the song is a cherished memory from her youth: “The vitality, rhythm, and beautiful melody of ‘Jabo ki Jabo na’ are a fond memory. Debojyoti Mishra has gifted me a wonderful track, and I sang it in my way.” Debojyoti Mishra shared a deeply personal connection, recalling how listening to the original song as a child, though seemingly “forbidden,” was an experience tied to his memory of his mother.
This new rendition of “Jabo Ki Jabo Na” is a beautiful tribute, perfectly timed to bring a wave of musical nostalgia to this year’s Durga Puja celebrations.
