3rd July

This episode discusses the history of 3rd July, which includes significant battles, political changes, and technological advancements. It highlights two specific stories: The execution Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in 1716 and the New York Tribune becoming the first newspaper to use a printing machine in 1886.

The History of 3rd July begins with the The Battle of Adrianople where Roman Emperor Constantine I defeats his co-emperor Licinius in the year 324. Many more such battles like the Battle at Hagenoorde (1090), the Battle of Horns of Hattin (1187), battle of Fariskur (1250) were fought in the history of 3rd July. In later years, in 1661 to be precise Bombay and Tanjore were given to King Charles II by the Portuguese. Furthermore. In 1760 The Maratha army captured Delhi on this day. All these were parts of the history of 3rd July. Besides all these and many more I see that Banda Singh Bahadur was executed on this day which I bring as my first story from the history of 3rd July.

Execution of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur

My first story from the history of 3rd July is an event that shows us that the fight for freedom and justice requires unwavering courage and resilience.

The story goes back to the year 1670 when a young boy was born. The name of the boy was Lachman Dev who in later years became a great worrier named Banda Singh Bahadur. He was a renowned Sikh warrior and commander of the Khalsa army. At the tender age of 15, he embarked on a spiritual journey, abandoning his home to become an ascetic. During this time, he was bestowed with the name Madho Das Bairagi. Eventually, he founded a monastery along the banks of the Godavari River in Nanded.

In 1707, Guru Gobind Singh accepted an invitation to meet Bahadur Shah I in southern India and paid a visit to Banda Singh Bahadur in 1708. Impressed by his dedication, Guru Gobind Singh initiated him as a disciple and bestowed upon him a new name, Gurbaksh Singh (as recorded in Mahan Kosh). However, he is more commonly known as Banda Singh Bahadur. As a blessing for the battles that lay ahead, Guru Gobind Singh gifted Banda Singh Bahadur five arrows.

Taking charge, Banda Singh Bahadur gathered a formidable force in Khanda, Sonipat, and spearheaded the struggle against the Mughal Empire. His first significant achievement came in November 1709 when he sacked the Mughal provincial capital of Samana. After establishing his authority and the Sikh Misl in Punjab, Banda Singh Bahadur took steps to abolish the zamindari system, empowering the tillers of the land with property rights.

Unfortunately, Banda Singh Bahadur was later captured by the Mughals and subjected to torturous treatment, and later hanged on this day the 3rd of July 1716.

With this, I come to my next story from the history of 3rd July.

The New York Tribune became the first newspaper to use a printing machine.

History of 3rd July takes us to the year 1886, when The New York Tribune, one of the most influential newspapers of its time, made history by becoming the first newspaper to utilize a printing machine in its production process.

Before the introduction of printing machines, newspapers were primarily printed using manual methods, such as hand-operated presses or typesetting by hand. These methods were time-consuming, labor-intensive, and limited the speed and volume of newspaper production. The advent of printing machines revolutionized the newspaper industry, enabling faster and more efficient printing processes.

The New York Tribune, a prominent newspaper established by Horace Greeley in 1841, played a vital role in shaping public opinion and providing news coverage during a transformative period in American history. By adopting the printing machine, the Tribune demonstrated its commitment to embracing technological advancements and enhancing its production capabilities.

The utilization of printing machines improved the overall quality of printed newspapers. These machines offered more precision in typesetting, resulting in clearer and more legible text. This advancement in printing technology contributed to enhanced readability and a more professional appearance of newspapers.

July 3, 1886, marks a significant milestone in the history of journalism, as the New York Tribune became the first newspaper to embrace the potential of printing machines. This step forward paved the way for the progress and advancements that have shaped the newspaper industry into what it is today.

That’s all for the day.
