Welcome to another episode of this series. Today I share the history of 29th May. However, before that, allow me to regale you with an awe-inspiring tale of Porismita Das who hails from the quaint village of Deka Shenchoa nestled within the ethereal landscapes of Majuli, Assam.
Porismita’s union in matrimony transpired prematurely, shackling her aspirations and rendering her unable to pursue her tenth-grade examination. Yet, like a dormant seed yearning for the radiant warmth of the sun, she discovered a glimmering opportunity to rekindle her academic pursuits when her beloved daughter prepared to undertake her tenth-grade board examinations. Silently and stealthily, Porismita immersed herself in the pages of knowledge ensconced within her daughter’s textbooks, determined to traverse the arduous path of education once again. And lo and behold, the time arrived when she, fortified by her unwavering dedication, appeared for her own tenth-grade examination, emerging triumphant with commendable prowess, securing a place in the echelons of the second division.

A resounding ovation is due to this illustrious lady, whose unquenchable thirst for knowledge evokes a profound sense of reverence within me. I salute her indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve, which serve as a testament to the unwavering power of the human spirit to surmount all obstacles in pursuit of enlightenment.
And now the history of 29th May.
Yours toastedly
Today, we embark on a journey back in time to celebrate a remarkable day in culinary history. On this very day, May 29, 1919, the brilliant mind of Charles Strite graced the world with an invention that would forever change our breakfast routines – the automatic pop-up toaster.
In the early 20th century, the culinary landscape was forever transformed as Mr. Strite’s creative gears turned, quite literally, toward perfecting the toasting process. Picture this: it’s a sleepy morning, and you stumble into the kitchen, craving a crisp, golden-brown piece of toast. The task seems simple enough, but little did our ancestors know that their toasting endeavors were about to become far more exciting.
Charles Strite, the toast aficionado, embarked on a quest to revolutionize the way we enjoyed this humble breakfast staple. Armed with his inventive spirit and a knack for problem-solving, Strite filed a patent for his “automatic pop-up toaster.” And let’s be honest, it was about time someone found a way to add some “pop” to our mornings!
Gone were the days of precariously hovering over a hot stove, anxiously trying to achieve that perfect shade of toastiness. Strite’s ingenious contraption introduced a new level of convenience. With the automatic pop-up toaster, all one needed to do was simply insert slices of bread, set the desired level of toastiness, and voila! The magic of the toaster did the rest.
So, dear readers, as you enjoy your morning toast, take a moment to appreciate the whimsical ingenuity of Charles Strite and his automatic pop-up toaster. Let it serve as a reminder that even the simplest of inventions can bring joy to our lives. Today, let us raise our toasty creations in honor of this historic event.
With this, I come to my second story from the history of 29th May.
We conquer the Space
On the 29th of May, 1999, the Space Shuttle Discovery accomplished a remarkable feat, becoming the first-ever spacecraft to successfully dock with the International Space Station (ISS). This significant achievement marked a crucial step in the ongoing quest for human presence and scientific advancements in space.
The Space Shuttle Discovery, a remarkable vehicle designed by NASA, had a long and distinguished service history. It was the third operational orbiter of the Space Shuttle program and had played a pivotal role in various missions. Its final mission, STS-133, took place in February 2011.
The International Space Station, a marvel of engineering and cooperation, has been continuously inhabited since November 2000. It serves as a research laboratory, a test bed for new technologies, and a symbol of international collaboration. The partnership between NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA, and other international space agencies has been instrumental in making the ISS a reality.
As we reflect upon this historic moment, let us acknowledge the bravery, determination, and ingenuity of all those involved in this incredible achievement. Their efforts have propelled us forward, inspiring generations to reach for the stars and continue exploring the vast unknowns of space.
May this accomplishment serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together and strive for the extraordinary.
Now the third story from the history of 29th May.
Conquering the Roof of the World: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s Historic Ascent of Mount Everest
On May 29, 1953, a monumental achievement in human history took place as Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay stood triumphantly at the summit of Mount Everest. Their successful expedition marked the first time in recorded history that any individual had reached the highest point on Earth. A detailed story was shared on this earlier. So to avoid repetition I am sharing the link The Smiling Mountaineer – Tenzing Norgay.
That’s all for today.
