This episode of the series includes Charles Brady King’s invention of the pneumatic hammer in the year 1892 and the Simplon Tunnel, the longest railroad tunnel in the world at that time, which was officially opened in 1900, the Assam Bhasha Andolon in 1960 besides other events from the history of 19th May.

We have reached the 139th  day of the year, and the fun fact is there are 226 days left until we reach the new year. So here I am back again sharing the history of 19th May. Did you know that it was this day in the year 1999 when Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was released in US cinemas? Or as a matter of fact the Coen brothers film, “No Country for Old Men,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on this day in the year 2007. There are many more such histories on this day. So here are some significant events from the history of 19th May.

Charles Brady King’s Pneumatic Hammer  

History of 19th May year 1892, Charles Brady King, an American engineer, and inventor, made a groundbreaking contribution to the field with the invention of the pneumatic hammer.

Assam Bhasha Andolon

History of 19th May 19, year 1960. A significant event took place in the history of Assam, India, known as the “Assam Bhasha Andolon” or the Language Movement of Assam. This movement was a crucial turning point in the struggle for the recognition and preservation of the Bengali language.

The Assam Bhasha Andolon emerged as a response to the decision by the Government of Assam to make Assamese the sole official language of the state, replacing Bengali. This decision sparked protests and opposition from the Bengali-speaking population, particularly in the Barak Valley region of Assam, where Bengali was widely spoken.

The movement gained momentum as thousands of people, comprising students, teachers, intellectuals, and the general public, actively participated in demonstrations, rallies, and strikes. The protestors demanded the recognition of Bengali as an official language alongside Assamese and the inclusion of provisions to safeguard the cultural and linguistic rights of the Bengali-speaking population.

The Assam Bhasha Andolon witnessed widespread civil disobedience and non-cooperation, with schools, colleges, and offices closing down, and people boycotting official functions. The protestors displayed their commitment by refusing to speak or write in Assamese, emphasizing the importance of linguistic diversity and cultural harmony.

Their determination and peaceful resistance ultimately led to the recognition of Bengali as an associate official language of Assam, alongside Assamese, through the Assam Official Language Act, 1960.

The Assam Bhasha Andolon had a profound impact on the linguistic and cultural landscape of Assam. It highlighted the significance of linguistic diversity and the need to protect the rights of linguistic minorities. The movement played a pivotal role in shaping language policies in the state and promoting a more inclusive approach to language and identity.

Today, Assam continues to celebrate its linguistic and cultural diversity, with Assamese and Bengali playing integral roles in the fabric of the state’s heritage. The Assam Bhasha Andolon remains an important chapter in the history of Assam, symbolizing the power of unity, peaceful protest, and the preservation of language and culture.
